Microsoft is announcing today that it plans to acquire LinkedIn for $26.2 billion. Microsoft’s deal to acquire the work-focused social networking giant is an all-cash transaction, and it will value LinkedIn’s shares at $196 each. Microsoft says LinkedIn will retain its own brand and independence, and existing CEO Jeff Weiner will remain and report directly to Satya Nadella.

Waste of money. LinkedIn is such crap. I don't know anyone that actually uses it to network or keep up on current trends.

LinkedIn is difficult at best to navigate and is becoming more like facebook.

I guess we don't have Money Talk anymore?

I think it's a worthless site but apparently a lot of companies use it for recruiting.

LinkedIn is amazing for recruiting. The news feed is crap though.

Id say having a database of where everyone works and the people they know would be pretty valuable.

Why click on a thread just to bitch?
Not everyone reads money talk and the OT is for a variety of topics.
On topic: The only reason I use LinkdIn is to find other people and news about my industry through the groups feature. It works for that but the newsfeed is very Facebook like and useless.

I've only had an account for about a year and it's been a waste of time. I work in contracts and procurement for a major company and about 90% of the people that have tried to "connect" with me are just sales people trying to hunt me down for possible business.
I guess it could work for those who like it as a recruiting tool.

This is undoubtably where most of its value is derived from.

Damn, I'm sure Microsoft never considered that. They really should have consulted Beachdude022 on tigerdroppings before making this $26 billion purchase.

I did get a job offer from LinkedIn but I would have to move to Atlanta and they wanted to pay me less than what I'm making on a contract basis.

Another site/service to be turned to shite by the MS machine.

That probably says more about the people you know than it does about LinkedIn.

I'd agree with this. I'd also say it's industry specific. Some industries love it, others not so much.
Also, I'd say that if LinkedIn is good for recruiters, which is a huge value, then it's also more useful looking to be recruited. I admit, it doesn't live up to its potential at all. But I've built good connections, and had some decent job offers through it.
Like any tool, if you know how to use it well, it can work. It you don't, then you think it sucks.

The tech bubble is huge and getting bigger

It is a glorified job search and recruitment website with terrible functionality

The "recruiting" seems like a crapshoot. I have friends who've gotten mid-six figure jobs from people finding them on LinkedIn, and others who've heard nothing in similar fields. I keep mine updated just so my CV can be found online in the event I apply for a job. But I don't treat it like Facebook and add every joker from high school now selling bullshite.
