I blame Katrina and the renaissance of all things New Orleans. All of the people I'm friends with who grew up and now live in Metairie always went to Metairie parades. They'd be on Bonnabel as kids and then at Circle K on Bonnabel & Vets or Walts, Red Eye etc further down Veterans as teenagers and young adults.

Now all of these same Metairie people have kids of their own and they're all about Endymion, Uptown parades, etc. The whole family dresses in their Fleurty Girl Mardi Gras attire and head to every parade in Orleans Parish, b/c "only in New Orleans" attitude. It's just not authentic if it's not in Orleans Parish. They love to take pictures of stupid shite and caption it "only in New Orleans" All of these people live in Metairie though.

Places like Metairie have much bigger problems on the horizon. The Millennials have (rightly I think) rejected cookie-cutter suburbia as their model. The city, with all its problems, is hip and hot again.

Yeah but people aren't going to be able to afford living in te city at these prices.

I lived in Metairie for awhile. It was great. Awesome neighborhood, I was five minutes from everything I needed and I was closer to downtown NOLA than my friends in uptown.

JP officials are worried about their future tax base. I guarantee it.

I doubt it....

Meanwhile, all the people in Lakeview who bought property and built houses, when it was sexy, are now getting tired of the same old B.S.

Bad roads, and don't tell me they're being fixed, 3rd world water system, crime and high property taxes with nothing in return...

I have friends dying to get back to Metairie, some even moved to the Northshore...

We considered buying in Lakeview, but the 350K plus house was sitting on a $10 road... Glad I didn't do it....

I live in River Ridge. easy access to NOLA Parades. Could care less about Metairie. When I was a kid though, I agree, they were a bigger deal for families. I think Uptown just got more family friendly.

We were in Metairie today....there were plenty of people out. Now, it's been much, MUCH more crowded in the past. But it was fine for the kids.

Somebody remind me why suburban Mardi Gras exists in the first place

Seemed fine when I was a kid 15-20 years ago. There were lots of krewes in Metairie and the parades were actually kind of decent. Since Katrina, people no longer want to spend the money to ride down Vets. If people are going to spend $1,500-$2,000 to ride in a parade, they want to go down the traditional uptown route or Endymion.

Membership in uptown krewes and Endymion has exploded in the past few years, and it has made mardi gras essentially irrelevant in Jefferson Parish. Metairie seems to do a decent job with Family Gras the first weekend keeping some people in Metairie, but parades have all but disappeared on the West Bank.

Well, maybe so. But I have two college students living in my suburban house and they don't give two craps about houses and yards.

Wow, young people not giving 2 shits about something they don't own? Earth shattering!!!
Wait till they get older, have jobs, and pay for everything themselves. They'll start caring about yards, safety, parking, etc and the burbs won't look so bad to them.
