I'm so used to hearing gunshots outside my house I sleep right through them now.

You can distinguish a gunshot in your sleep from a house that you aren't in? I'm not really sure why I've gotten two downvotes, gun shots just aren't that loud if you're not close to the gun. It's highly unlikely it would wake you up.

I've shot racoons in my back yard at 11 at night before with a .22, and i live in a neighborhood. Most of my neighbors know it's me and buddy of mine a street over heard it in his house, and that's a .22.

I remember a few years ago some moron shooting a dog 2 streets over in my neighborhood during the day while we were inside and i could clearly tell a pistol was just shot.

Nick and his family tailgated with us for every saints game. This is incredibly sad. Knowing the family, i haven't the slightest idea who did this.

If it turns out to be a drive by shooting that is incredibly bad luck for both to be hit and killed

hopefully they get whoever did it

Know how I know youve never fell asleep in a deer stand and your buddy shoots a deer 300 yards away.

Perhaps you just missed it, but I said while you're sleeping. A gunshot isn't going to rouse you out of sleep and you immediately know it was a gunshot.

Know how I know your story has nothing to do with sleeping in an insulated house and a gunshot being fire in another insulated structure?

The supposed time is just before midnight. Unless I was awake, I wouldn't hear a gunshot inside of a different house.

Let's just say I know a guy who is a gunsmith and has fired pistols inside his home numerous times and no one outside reported hearing anything. Y'all are overestimating the noise a pistol makes.
Edited because maybe they heard something but not enough to make them think anythjng was wrong

maybe not a .22 but any decent pistol, rifle, or shotgun in the immediate area will wake your arse up with the quickness even in a house

My next door neighbors were sleeping and they heard it. They just assumed it was me and asked me the next day.

Pistols are loud. From the reports, it wasn't just one shot, it was mulitple. You're going to wake up if someone shoots a pistol several times in the general vicinity of you, regardless if you're sleeping or not.

There may be a few select individuals who sleep like bricks that don't hear it, but there's no way no one will hear it, even if everyone was sleeping. If a pistol was shot mulitple times, someone from the 7 or 8 houses in close proximity to this house is going to hear it.

A shotgun shot inside another house isn't waking you up Not unless The Princess and the Pea was written about you.

I have heard gunshots fired in houses, buildings, etc multiple times. I heard a couple a few months ago that were probably a mile and a half away from inside my house. It is a very distinguishable sound to me. Nothing like it

I normally don't go to sleep until around 4am. My point was that none of the neighbors said they heard anything, so it could have been suppressed. This only happened at 11:30pm. I could've heard it, but they didn't for one reason or another. It was also that the reports said she didn't hear a damn thing.

Unless you have a mile and a half of completely open space between you and the source of that shot, bullshite.

I agree with this. I don't have experience with gunshots near me while sleeping, but I was in an earthquake that hit while I was sleeping and by the time I came to, it had stopped. I thought I was dreaming and had to be told the next morning it was an earthquake. I wouldn't consider myself a notably light or heavy sleeper. I imagine to be awoken by a gunshot and aware of exactly what it was, you'd have to be an exceptionally light sleeper or not completely asleep.

Nope, actually in a city and across the interstate. My buddy, who also grew up around guns, came out of his room and said, "Was that just gunshots?"

As other people in this thread have said, if you know what you are hearing, it is easy to discern...even by the slightest little noise

Do you disagree?

Do you think that sound wave wouldn't get distorted by a mile and a half of urban density? Not to mention his house's insulation and any ambient noises.

Even so, my original point still stands. It isn't waking you up.

Were you sleeping, though? Maybe I am a heavier sleeper than I think, but I feel like my mind would turn those sounds to a dream about fireworks or popcorn and I wouldn't even consider that I had actually heard gunshots the next morning unless I distinctly remember that part of the dream.
