quote:

The venom contains a neurotoxin called mandaratoxin,[10] a single-chain polypeptide with a molecular weight around 20 kD, which can be lethal even to people who are not allergic if the dose is sufficient (i.e., if multiple stings are received; a single wasp cannot inject a lethal dose). However, if the victim is allergic to the venom, this greatly increases the risk of death.

Got stung on my hand by a normal hornet and my whole hand went numb.

I could imagine getting stung near the heart could make for a bad time.

This has totally changed my mind about God. There is no way we all have a greater purpose in life if we're allowed to die by this son of a bitch.

I saw a show on Animal Planet about this things. They'll raid honeybees' hives, specifically farm apiaries, literally biting honeybees in half with strong mandibles, then take all the honey.

Also, all the honeybees you see in your yard are female. Only the females have stingers. The males stay in the hive. Their sole purpose is to reproduce.

Anyway, back to the point, to counter this attack from the hornet, thousands honeybees will literally smother it, like a blanket, then beat their wings which increases their body temperature, literally overheating the hornet until it's no more.

I like bees but hornets and wasps..... nope.

Meet the Tarantula Hawk

Generally ranked 2nd in the world for most painful insect sting behind the bullet ant.

quote:

However, the sting—particularly that of P. grossa—is among the most painful of all insects, though the intense pain only lasts about five minutes. One researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating, unrelenting pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations."

IMGUR page with more pics and a sting story

Highlights:
quote:

So anyways, this morning I went outside to tend to my plants...

and as I was watering my Daylilies, I didn't notice that there was a Tarantula Hawk sitting on one of the flowers (I dunno how I didn't see it - I mean, they are pretty closely colored, but still. I suppose my Daylilies are blacker than the picture, and it was still sorta dark in the morning). So the wasp got understandably upset when I poured water over it and started shaking the flower a bunch (I was pruning it), and flew at me - at which point I noticed it - and stung me in the arm. I didn't notice much else after that...

Because I got taken the frick down.

quote:

TL;DR: wasp stung me so hard I forgot what time it was and thought I was in hell for 5 minutes.

They live here in America.
