Just take her. I went for a second opinion and they saw more detail on my biopsies than the patholgists here in Lafayette did (on my exact same submitted slides) They also downgraded the grade of tumor from a 2 to a 1 for me, which could have saved me from damaging chemo and radiation that I didn't need. Since Biopsies and pathology will be part of my life for atleast the next 5 years I went with MDA. I did not want to be going there as a last ditch effort because something was missed. I also got to participate in a clinical trial that helped to map my cancer and really solidify my treatment plan. I was 34 at time of diagnosis. Just go.

Good place.
My doctor from France stayed there for a few years and went back run a dept at a cancer hospital in New Jersey.
Had inpatient chemo and bone marrow transplant there.
Inpatient the service is great.
Outpatient is good, but busy.
It does get hectic and aggravating until you get use to how busy they are.

Thanks for all the comments. MD Anderson is world class, however my mom leukemia was just too aggressive. She almost died in Houston but they got her stabilized so we could bring her home last week. We had to put her in Hospice of West Alabama earlier today, she only has a couple weeks at most. I'm really not religious but I've prayed more the past few weeks than I have my entire life. Losing a parent sucks. frick Cancer.

No personal experiences, but no plenty of folks who have gone there. If I had something the deal with, I'd go there asap.

Prayers for your mom.

Lost a friend to AML last year. He was 71. He was diagnosed in 2013 and was doing well until May/June 2016. Dr Millitello did all he could for 3 years but it became really aggressive last year. Enjoy the time with you mother. Very sorry that she has to go through this.

Mother in law is there right now. Actually driving back this morning. Baton Rouge wrote her off and said they could could chemo to prolong possibly her lung cancer. MD is doing the immune therapy boost (something like that) followed by chemo and then said her cancer area is operable to be able to remove what little is left. At least you get a more positive outlook from them and I think there is a reason why so many go there.
Good friend also was told by doctors in Baton Rouge and New Orleans after a second opinion that his arm would have to be amputated due to cancer. MD Anderson did surgery on his rotor cup removed the cancer and still has his arm. He does have some limitation regarding overhead movement and such but at least he kept his arm.

I just got back from MD Anderson with my family.

My mom got diagnosed with cancer a couple weeks ago and we went to a doctor in Jackson that wanted to do surgery right away to try and remove as much of the tumor as he could.

We wanted a second opinion so we flew to Houston and met with a doc out there and he said we do not do surgery right away as that is a thing of the past. We first want to run chemo to shrink the tumors and then do surgery to remove them. He claimed anyone wanting to do surgery first is just trying to show off how good a surgeon they are and that is not the best treatment route in this day and age.

Needless to say we are going to follow the route the MD Anderson dr laid out for us and we are hoping for the best. It's ovarian cancer btw.

How many of them lived? Serious question.

It is a great facility.
I went through my bone marrow transplant there.
I also went years before that for inpatient Chemo.
Outpatient kind of cluster but worth it.
Inpatient very good service.

When I went if they feel you can get the treatment locally they will send you home to get that treatment.

When the doctor sees you for the first time at 4:30 pm and says you will start chemo tonight inpatient you will. They admitted me up to 11 pm and started Chemo at 1 am.

Top notch science, but, as others have mentioned, some patients feel like a number there. If you get the feeling it's just not for you, there are several great cancer centers from La. going west involved in leading edge science. MD is a great place to start.
Eta: pathology and who's reading are super important for your planning right now. If you've had any other diagnostics, don't be afraid to ask questions about the tests and whether they should be repeated by another company/institution. Neighbor diagnosed AML within the last three years, being treated locally, rides his bike 37 miles a day. Early 60s.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Take her to MD Anderson. They will give her the best chance to beat AML.

Cancer runs in my wife's family, sadly we are very familiar with MD Anderson. Not sure there is a better hospital on Planet Earth.

Go.

My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had surgery at the General along with Chemo treatments. The cancer came back with a vengeance. My dad contacted MD Anderson's to set up an appt. The doctor told him that they treat really aggressively there. He said basically Im going to kill you and bring you back to life as many times as it takes to get rid of it. The Doc used Lance Armstrong as an example. He was given so much Chemo it he developed blisters all over his body. It was basically burning his skin from the inside out. But, anyway during the process of my dad getting setup with MD Anderson, he passed away in his sleep.

It's probably the best cancer center on the planet. There may be other research institutions that may be better at treating a specific type of cancer, but MD Anderson is where you want to go. If they can't help you as well as someone else, they'll refer you.
