Did you force your wife to take your last name?

I have a friend who is about to be married and his wife doesnt want to be forced his name. Is this a deal breaker?

What about Smith-Mohammed?

It shouldn't be a question unless your last name is retarded. or she's famous.

Gf joked about the hyphenated bs. She was smiling, I was not.

It's been made clear that my name will be taken

I'd like her to take my name, but if she doesn't want to, IDGAF.

Kids get one name, though. Hyphenating shite like that is stupid and a burden on the kid.

I didn't force her to, but a hyphenated last name could have been a deal breaker.

I didn't "force" her, but I don't think it ever occurred to either one of us that she wouldn't take my last name.

What is her reasoning? Sometimes women don't change their name for professional reasons if they are well established or hold professional licenses.

There was no question about it, she was taking my name. She didn't even ask to hyphenate. It was automatically expected that she would take it

My wife wanted my name, so no need to force. I find it odd to not take the last name, unless you're an established professional that would have to go through hell changing it (doctor for example). Not sure if it would have been a deal breaker or not. Would probably depend on if the wife expected the kid to have a hyphenated last name. My last name is too long as it is

Even if she is a professional, just change it over the summer and she'll have all new kids the next semester.
