Separate completely? Combined? Mix of the two?

Curious to see what has worked and hasn't.

Eta, how long have y'all been married/ using this system

Combined. Easy to deal with and nothing to hide. I get others' decision to not go that way, but it works for us.

You do whatever works for you as a couple.

For some it is joint everything, for others it is separate. I think as long as you and your spouse are having conversations about finances and are aware of each other's debts and can both agree on how finances are tackled as a couple....what difference does it make what others do?

I haven't touched finances in 10 years.

As long as my debit card works, I don't care.

Combined. We talk a few times a month about what bills are do and what we owe.
Never had an issue

I don't understand the rationale behind not combining one's finances. You are legally bound together by marriage might wanna know what you and your wife who are really one in the eyes of law and God possess/owe/spend.

I only see trouble and deception is splitting them.

We have separate accounts bc we were independent adults when we got married. Also a little laziness because of all the autopays etc that are set up.

We each have bills we are responsible for, and if one of us needs money we share.

I like it because I am not questioning every little spend, and more importantly she isn't questioning me lol.

We could do a better job saving. I generally max 401K, but there isn't a real solid we hit saving for x a month. TThat is probably easier to drive with shared funds.

I make all the big decision in my house, like who we vote in for president.

My wife makes all the small decisions, like where we will live, what we spend money on, when/how we have sex, and which chores i'll complete this weekend.

She's such a sucker.

Since my wife doesn't work and spends all the money I make, I like to classify it as unilateral. She pays all the bills though, so there is that.

We have separate credit cards and checking accounts with a shared savings. We are joint owners on all of them though.

It's all through the same bank too and all passwords are shared. Our main reason for never combining everything was because auto drafts changing would have been inconvenient and not worth it. We both make good money so finances are something we never have issues with though.

For the last 6 years we've paid our own bills separately and I've also handled all bills regarding the home and utilities. Now that we have a 6 month old we're attempting to save more and we just opened a joint account that will be used to pay the bills.

I handle the all the finances.

I give my wife a weekly allowance. If she doesn't do all of her chores, she doesn't get her money.

While everything is combined under the same bank, I manage it all. But the way we do it, and I believe it will work out in the long run, is at least 3 accounts, one for all the money to go into and pay bills out of, and then we each have a separate checking account where we effectively get an allowance to spend on whatever we want. That way if I buy something stupid, or she does, there's no argument over it.
