For those of you who either run marathons or have spouses who run them, do you expect a gift or give the runner a gift for running a marathon? I've heard mixed responses from various friends. I bought my wife a gift for running her first marathon last year. She is running her second this weekend. Should I buy her another gift? I wasn't going to, but what is the OT protocol?

You aren't obligated to give someone a gift for running a marathon. This is one of the dumbest things I've read here.

Take her to dinner or something afterwards

Now runners want participation trophies too?

Thank god. I'm going to show my support and will definitely take to dinner. I thought that was enough. Just wanted to make sure.

Total horseshite. Is it only for marathons? What about half marathons? What is the shortest distance one of these fools can run and still expect a gift?

My wife did a long bike ride thing for cancer and I was the only douche at the finish without flowers/gift. (I had no idea).

Not sure how multiple events would work though. I would say get some flowers and you're in good shape.

I think it depends on the person. If its a person who is extremely overweight and is trying to become healthier and goes out and does a 5K or 10K, maybe someone would be inclined to give them something. 1st Half Marathon, maybe. 1st full marathon, more understandable. I had a few friends bake me cookies and brownies and another give me some running clothes after my 1st full marathon, but nothing after my second. If someone is craziest enough to run a second full marathon, then they must be a dedicated runner, and gifts are probably out of the question now... Tell her to run an ultra and you will give her another gift...

I'm ok with this. I meant someone that would be pissed if they didn't get something.

I don't know anyone who has ever ran a marathon that expected a gift for finishing

not one

this is something the OP made up in his mind

the only "gift" I have ever wanted after a marathon was food and to not get off the recliner for the rest of the day
