That day, Eric Joe skipped Black Friday lines and instead went home to visit his parents. During the afternoon, Joe flew what he described to Ars as a homemade hexacopter drone. His aerial device hovered low and moved slow, logging just three and a half minutes of flight time in total.

Then, bang. A loud boom rang out over the neighboring walnut trees. Growing up on a farm, Joe instantly recognized the sound as a 12-gauge shotgun. The unknown shooter hit his apparent target in a single attempt, and Joe soon watched his drone fall from the sky.

"When I went out to go find it, I saw him come out shotgun-in-hand," Joe told Ars by phone on Thursday. The man found himself face-to-face with his parents’ neighbor, Brett McBay.

"I asked: ‘Did you shoot that thing?’ He said, ‘Yeah, did we get it?’"

Joe claimed that McBay said: "I thought it was a CIA surveillance device." No matter the reason, the drone pilot wanted to resolve this encounter quickly and civilly (" I didn't want to get argumentative with a guy with a shotgun," Joe said). He went back inside and inspected the aircraft. It wouldn't be flying again. Later that evening, the two men exchanged e-mails.

Joe is asking for $850 in parts cost fix his drone and McKay is not paying despite losing the case in small claims court.

If it was flying over the neighbors property lines, I think he should be allowed to shoot it. People are starting to intrude and bother others with these things.

I think that would be reasonable if it is flying low enough or close enough to be a noise or physical nuisance. There should be some boundry of what is too low and unreasonable tho... certainly at some point up in the air it is no longer your property (airplanes flying overhead)

Kid was trespassing on the man's property. He deserved to have it shot down.

A drone won't go that high.

quote:

The exact altitude requirements (except for purposes of takeoff and landing) are as follows. In congested areas, airplanes must stay 1,000 feet (300 m) higher than any obstacle (building, antenna, etc.) within a 2,000 feet (610 m) radius of the aircraft. In non congested, sparsely populated areas, or over bodies of water, the pilot must remain at least 500 feet (150 m) from any person, vehicle, vessel, or structure. Private landowners retain their right to exclusive use of the airspace for the reasonable enjoyment of their property up to 500 feet above their lands.

#Team shotgun. If technically feasable ( )somebody should market a jamming device that scrambles rc signals within 500ft.

Pretty sure it is against to law to jam radio signals with a device.

I bought a drone 3 months ago. Mine is smaller and goes up only about 8 stories, but the video and pics are cool enough at that height

Yeah, legality would be the other aspect. I was just trying to think of an alternative to anti-aircraft fire.

What an a-hole, and kind of a paranoid idiot. This is like the old man across the street who kicks your RC car, not to protect his noble property rights, but because he's a miserable a-hole.

There was a dispute as to whether it was over the neighbor's property or not.

Judge ruled that it didn't matter which I disagree with.

I don't think drones should be allowed to be flown over private property without prior authorization.

Peeping Tom and/or trespassing laws should apply over private property without consent.

I'm not saying you should be allowed to fly your drone into someone else's yard, but I am saying blowing it out the sky with a shotgun is not an appropriate response

How else would you protect your airspace in a rural area?

Did he think shooting down government property made it any better?

Exactly right. Frick the people downvoting your post.

Someone wants to fly a drone? Fly it over your own property, or in a public place. Not over my damn yard.

ETA: Get off my lawn!
