A living creature is worse, because it could cause harm.

This mutt was pissing on my property, eyeing my show bitch and yapping, it is much more annoying than a harmless drone flying by. Also much less expensive to replace.

The position that you can blast a drone out of the sky with a shotgun is, in fact, every bit as hick as the previously posted example of lighting your neighbor's car on fire because his wheels are on your grass. There are remedies for people trespassing and/or allowing their items to enter your own property. None of those involve instant destruction.

But you and some others are using it with the knowledge that the connotation is something akin to shooting at a person ("shoot first, ask questions later"), when that's not the case. It's also ridiculous to assume that someone would immediately just destroy a car parked on his property, since that never happens in today's world, but more importantly, because a car parked on your property is an inconvenience more than it is a threat to your privacy. Your "hick" reference is not only pretentious and short-sighted, it's meant to evoke a caricatured concept that doesn't apply.

What if someone halfway around the world flies a drone right outside your teenage daughter's window and streams a live feed on the internet? Would it be a hick move to destroy it? What if a drone enters into your homestead without you realizing it? Will law enforcement have the technological wherewithal to regulate this effectively? Regarding your analogy, does a car or anything else in the world have this ability with zero physical and minimal if any legal repercussions for the perpetrator?

I understand that I am using extremes here, but you have to use them to be able to adapt to worst case scenarios. It seems people don't have the foresight, caution, or imagination to understand what the implications are. I'm not saying this technology is going to create some type of dystopia, but dismissing people's reservations about it is stupid.

Was the person spying? We already have laws for that.

Best bet would be to call the law and go from there.

great analogy ...

If he indeed thought his daughter was being perved on I don't blame him. However I would have followed the drone back to wherever it came, then possibly gone to prison for a different reason. But I wouldn't have a gun charge.

Edit: nevermind I got confused.....gentleman with daughter didn't fire.

i dont have any problem with people blowing the thing out of the sky. I'd be more concerned about discharging a firearm in a suburban/urban area and hurting innocent bystanders with bullets falling from the sky.

but i've got an old bucket of baseballs in my shed in case i see any drones overhead. probably throw my arm out trying to hit the damn thing.

Amazon will write the law for this, and it will read....

I really want to agree with the property owner but shut like this:
quote:

I had my 40 mm Glock on me and they started toward me and I told them, 'If you cross my sidewalk, there's gonna be another shooting.'"

Makes me say frick him. Arrest his arse.

I should have the rights to the first 500' of airspace over my property.

I support this man.

What will the skies look like in 10 years with all of these new drones? Aren't some companies toying around with making deliveries with these things? I think eventually it will be common to see drones flying all over the place

My concern is privacy and security.

They can cross over fences for homeowners or prisons. They can hover over crowds. They can fly low enough to injure people or damage property. If they can deliver packages they can deliver pipe bombs or invade your privacy with a high performance camera.

They will become common enough where they would be difficult to track and operator accountability would be next to impossible to realize. Laws are needed to protect the privacy and rights of the individual and property owners.

Well he said it came around and hovered above his property.. Then it returned.. That's suspicious and it has a camera.. He said if it was just flying over he wouldn't care. That sounds justified to me.

Why didn't the owner comment to this and even explain what the hell he was doing.. Especially over his property so long..

eah, it'll be interesting to see how the debate goes. It'll eventually boil down to "how much air above your land is considered your property"

How would airspace be measured? People have structures and objects of different heights on their properties, and a private airspace cutoff would be invisible and difficult to uphold.

I agree with this.

I had this exact same thought. I'd probably be incapacitated less than half way thru the bucket, however, I also have an old potato gun in there also. That might be a fun contest.

Are you comparing a drone flying 100' above someone's house to actual people entering your house without permission?

I think the property owner or inhabitant should be allowed to defend themselves against both....and both should be illegal.

Fly your drone over your own damn property.

Paint ball gun

Pellet gun

Sling shot

Lots of ways to take it down that won't get you arrested

But I don't blame the guy one bit for knocking it out of the sky
