Man kills wife to end her suffering from cancer

I'm not sure how I feel about this....

Mercy killing?

A southeastern Kentucky man charged with killing his wife says he fatally shot her because she asked him to end her suffering from breast cancer.

"She told me she wanted me to end her pain. All I said [was] 'Jay, all I’ve got is what the doctor gave you.' She said 'No, I want you to stop my pain for good,'" Ernest Chris Chumbley told FoxLexington.com from his cell in the Laurel County Detention Center

Neighbors told FoxLexington.com that the couple had been happily married for more than 20 years, but Virginia Chumbley's breast cancer had ravaged her health.

“She was hurting real bad. We could hear her at night like she was gasping for air,” said Stanley Campbell, the Chumbley's next-door neighbor.

I just did what she asked,"Chumbely said from his cell. "And I would expect no different from her if I was asking her."

I will tell you how I feel, he could have done it a different way. My wife is in constant pain, I mean real pain and it really hurts both of us. We have been married 25 years and I don't think I could do it but if it ever came to that, over medicate would be the way I would guess.

No reason to shoot her. There are other peaceful ways to end the pain.

As was mentioned. Give it ALL. Better than shooting. More peaceful and less to deal with legally.

Pardon me.

You are right. Sounds the woman in OP story could have "done it herself" while husband was "sleeping."

Yeah I mean if she is sold on offing herself she should try not to implicate her loved ones. I wouldn't want to spend the rest of my life in prison to do you a solid.

That's how I see it. I can almost understand wanting to kill yourself due to terminal illness, but to ask your loved one to do it? If I was in the same scenario there is simply no way I could point a gun at my wife. If she were to do it herself while I'm "sleeping" or while I'm "away", I'd like to think that I would be understanding and would respect her decision.

I think you have to think about religion in this. Many times they believe suicide is unforgivable and damns you to hell. Where murder he can say he is sorry and theoretically see her in another life. Not that that is the case here, but I do believe that is why you do not see more suicide from terminally ill people.

My mom's brother asked her many times to "pull the plug". Terminal cancer throughout his body. My father is a pharmacist and had the means to do it. She decided against it in the end but definitely thought about it. I don't think we should judge anyone until we are in that position and see a loved one suffering.

Until you are in that position (hopefully never) we can never say how we would react

Great point. I am not too religious so I would hope to have the respect for my loved ones to send them away, and have the ambulance there so they don't have to directly deal with it.

Tough situation either way

Thug POS. A life is a life and we are all God's creatures. The only person that can decide to end her life is God. If we make an exception now, whose to say what slippery slope this will lead down.

my mother's final decision was based on religion and morals. I believe that a sin is a sin when the only person you hurt is yourself. The problem comes in when you are hurting others.

re: Man kills wife to end her suffering from cancer
My father-in-law died a slow painful death. On several occasions he asked me to bring him a gun and a bullet. When he finally passed I watched him suffer for days as he lie dieing grasping for breath. I thought about smothering him with a pillow if I was left alone in the room with him to end his suffering. In the end I let nature take it's course. When it was all over I felt in a way that I had let him down by not ending it sooner.

Yeah. I can't imagine and, God willing, I will never have to experience that.

I don't think you understand how this works, we get to make snap judgements with little or no facts. Bible says killing is wrong, this man killed someone, this country was founded on the bible, we should kill him. End of discussion.

Im going to change a few words to show people why this thinking is stupid.
