Mail Order Brides Question

Has anyone seen such an arrangement up close?
GF and I were at lunch over the weekend, when this dorky but successful looking guy comes in with a young asian woman, and older asian woman and what appeared to be the guy's baby. We walked in basically at the same time and it became apparent that the asian women spoke very little english at all.
Restaurant was almost empty, so we could hear all of their interactions. Two or three times, the guy raised his voice at the younger woman, to the point I thought I might have to involve myself. I think he was likely just frustrated she wasn't understanding what he was saying about the baby, but it was pretty uncomfortable.
Anyway, I know modern arrangements send dudes over there to go on dates with these women or what not, but it made me curious about whether these things are the complete disasters they appear to be.

A co-worker at my job in college had a Russian mail order bride. He technically had to go to Russia to get her, but he found her on a site. She ended up having a 16 year-old son that had to move back to the states with him.
She was actually pretty good looking and he was hideous. You could tell she hated him right off the bat.

I think if you're in one of those deals, your odds of getting killed have to be pretty high. Either your husband will beat you to death after you burn the pot roast or your wife will invite "cousin Sergi" to stay with you and you'll end up getting offed.

My wife worked with a guy that had a mail order bride. Apparently, he would talk about his marital problems all the time. After like a month, the bride refused to sleep in the same room with him.

I watched a show once about that. The bride ended up killing the husband. Men who resort to that are stupid. Those women aren't looking for love. They'll take some ugly dude they aren't attracted to for a while if it gets them a green card, and then they'll divorce him and either take his money or find some other idiot to leech off of. It's so dumb.

I know of one instance. I use to have a customer when I worked down in BR who had a mail order bride. He was an older white guy and she was a slightly younger Asian lady.
They seemed to get along very well. I think she may have been Vietnamese or Korean (its been a while).
He got a wife who would cook and be loyal and loving to him, and she got a house hold to run, a car, and a garden to work in and both of them were content from what I could see.
Honestly, had it not been brought up by him I would have never guessed it. They seemed to really love each other.

I know a former co-worker that, at age 41, married a 19 year old Russian mail-order bride. She quickly pumped out three kids and then left him and the kids. The guy also made himself out to be the victim of his wife leaving him with the kids and fairly broke (he is an attorney in a state job), but I never felt sorry for his dumb-arse.

Guy in my neighborhood had an arranged marriage with a Chinese lady. Cops were called at least 3 times for him beating the shite out of her until she finally left him. He is waiting for the divorce to go through before marrying another one that a Vietnamese family that owns, shocker, a nail salon is paying him 10k to go through with. I'm betting he probably does the same to her.

I'm wondering whether abusive douchebags are just naturally attracted to having a wife they largely bought and own, or whether it's a combo of that and language barriers and having a wife who fricking loathes you.
Either way it seems like a recipe for abuse and unhappiness.
