The first apartment I had with Butters didn't have a sliding glass door to put one of those doggie door inserts in. So a year? He got used to it quick though once I got one.
Makes it sooo much easier, you don't have to constantly let your dogs in and out of the house.
Although my inlaws have a doggie door bell thing.....their dog is trained to hit this button when he needs to go out and it sounds a doorbell sound throughout the house so they can hear.

My lab follows me around, so if I happen to be walking through the house and I'm not tripping over her, I know she is sitting next to the door and needs to go out. Fortunately for me she is on a 3 a day schedule. I let her out as soon as I wake up. She goes out when I get home from work, and again before I lock up for the night. This dog is clockwork.

I did a couple of MS Paints about the cockroaches and the shark bite scar on her leg, but that was at my old job and I didn't save them I don't think. :(
