I live in Louisiana and may be purchasing a car in Texas. Will I have to pay sales tax in Texas? Or do I wait to pay sales tax when I come back to Louisiana and register it here?

You will only pay the taxes in one state.

you'll have the option to not pay the tax when you purchase. Then you'll have a month to pay the tax when you get back to Louisiana.

I've bought the last nine vehicles my family has owned in Texas. They use your residence or wherever you register the vehicle and you pay tax there. Nine of mine are in Louisiana and one is registered in Texas using a place we have there and it stays there as well most of the time.

Still the ones I've paid LA tax on are still 5k cheaper than any dealer in Louisiana.

If GM is what you are looking for go see Henry Lewis at Lewis Chevrolet in Canton, Texas. Small town dealership but he moves some vehicles. One of the largest vette dealers in the south.

He also owns the big flea market. Monday something.

I don't even look in Louisiana anymore for vehicles.

Bought our last in Alexandria.

Saved more than $5K for what AllStar in BR wanted for almost the exact vehicle.

Did you answer it? No.

You will pay taxes based on your residence: state and city.

The dealer will probably title it for you in Louisiana and take care of all the taxes.

Purchased in Dallas and the dealer estimated the taxes on his end. When I registered in Louisiana, I just paid the outstanding difference - the dealership underestimated slightly but he submitted the tax work to LA DMV. Purchased in Dallas because 5k difference to same cars in Baton Rouge.

Technically, you should pay the sales tax wherever you bought the car. Then when you title the car in Louisiana, you pay a use tax on any difference (if the tax is higher where you live). Dealerships care very little about this though and do whatever you ask.
