I haven't lived in La for a LONG time. My mom recently (10/15) received a letter from the DPS OMV saying I owed the state $125 for back debt due to a lapse in my auto insurance from 4/1998 (which I can't recall happening)...I definitely don't have the truck or the information...seems like 17 years is a bit long for statute of limitations on something I've never received a notice on. Oh, and I was living in Texas at the time, but I still had La plates and Insurance...

USAA insurance doesn't even go back that far so that I can get a copy of my insurance if I even wanted to.

Is this some ploy by La to generate revenue? Has anyone fought it and won?

achtung!

also note, current insurance commish blames Jindal. It is part of his crazy financing schemes that passes muster with Grover Norquist, to raise funds w/o raising taxes.

There are more than a few topics regarding this. Look around.

Yes.

It will be a while before anyone "wins" this. It just started last week. The wheels of justice are slow and tired.

It just started last week. I do think it's bullshite that they expect you to prove anything more than ten years old. Hell you could of committed a string of felonies in 1998 confess now and the police can't even charge you for them, yet here is the DMV going after people saying they owe from 17 years ago. I mean how can you prove it? Whats to stop them from just pulling these charges out of thin air? This is Louisiana.

If you don't live in La you can probably just ignore it...if you need to deal with the La dmv you will have to handle it.

I wouldn't if you live in Texas or Mississippi. The states share OMV records. I had something in Texas keep my license from renewing in Louisiana.

Grover Norquist,

Jindal DESTROYED this state trying to honor that fricking pledge just so he could be in 16th place for the nomination for president. Jindal is easily the worst governor of all time. I hope he stays the frick out of the state and never comes back.

Thanks for the replies.

My apologies for not looking for this. Yes, I should have.

1.4 million? Wow. State's hurting for money there. I don't care about it until they start using words like "credit report", "collection agencies", and "garnish". Personally I think it's outside the statute of limitations. I never received a letter from them.

They should be damn glad my mother didn't sell that place when my Dad died. How would they contact me then?

If I have to go back thru paper work dating back to 1998 (if I have it...I'm a pack rat so I might)...maybe I should charge them for the research and documentation fee.

I surrender my vehicle in November last year to the dealership because the federal government told me I had to when I filed bankruptcy.

Got a letter last week. Car was surrendered and sold by dealership.

Certainly the worst governor of LA in my life. He has fricked this state so badly with his political ambition.
