That's old school stuff but, it's cheap, the new stuff comes in some great color and patter choices, it takes a lot of wear and tear, it is easy to replace and repair.

If you are in BR, there is a place on Florida blvd near the old movie theater and Ryan's past Cortana that has discount building materials. They used to have nice Formica in there. Like crack head cheap. I know I was doing the counters in my duplex and I did both sides and wanted to add a matching bartop. I paid more for just the bartop at the counter top store than I did for all the other counters combined from the place on Florida. It's in a strip mall, across from the Ryan's cannot remember the name.

Not a bad idea. I did my tops in tile and wasn't that bad. Just working a lot of shifts for guys who are worse off.
