It happened at my mom's house. AC, several electronics, and a few TVs were fried.
Happened at my house a few years ago. I was sitting in a chair with my plugged in laptop on my lap. I felt a little jolt in my hand when it hit. Two cable boxes and the laptop charger messed up. Laptop died a month later. Very weird.

Lightning strike to my house fried all of my tv's
Has anyone else had this happen before? Some of them weren't even on at the time. I will now have to replace 5 of them along with the direct tv boxes as well.
I don't even...

This happened to me about 2 years ago. It was a pain in the arse.

Happened to me as well. Take pics before the Directv guy comes. It is code in most areas for all electrical, cable, and phone providers to properly ground equipment. If Directv's installer didn't ground it, they are liable for the damages. When this happened to me I noticed my dish wasn't grounded. When I mentioned to Directv they immediately sent me all new equipment. They may be responsible for the tv's as well but suing them will cost more than TV replacement unless you own some high dollar eqiupment.
Also, check other inputs on your TV. It may have only damaged the HDMI input that was connected. Try HDMI 2, s-video, etc.

The TVs will not turn on at all. Think they're done for.

I had this happen to my office recently. Insurance covered everything with relative ease, but had a 1k deductible.

Jmon's comments fit what happened to a neighbor(0.2miles away). We heard/saw the strike between us; their electric line took the hit and most of their electronics got fried. It also knocked wall receptacles out of the wall. (Never be the last house on a multihouse electric feed).
We got hit once but it was within the first year of Directv service and their one year guarantee at that time covered it all.

With a small screwdriver and a little research you may be able to fix them. Had a similar issue at the camp a few years ago. This was a JVC television, but there was a fuse under a service panel that was popped.
Hopefully you won’t be on the hook for them, but if you are (or if you’re just curious) do some digging. Might only cost you a couple of bucks to get one or more of them back online.

Most of them were Vizio's. Do you have to remove the entire cover off the back or is there a fuse panel?

Had this happen about 6 years ago. Only thing it fried were my tv's nothing else. Brought all my tv's to a repair shop and they fixed them for around $200 apiece. Saved a lot of money than just buying new ones.

Surge protector far from guaranteed to help with lightening strike. They are made for electrical power company surges. Not lightening.
