I don't believe a commuter train from Nola to BR is viable, but this project seems like it could be real possibility especially with all of the new apartments going up downtown.

I think the blue line through the Westbank is much less necessary than the yellow line.

Can I get some pros and cons of this project?

pros

It would provide fast, efficient transportation throughout the NOLA metro.

cons

It would be run by New Orleans city officials and would come in 300% over budget after the most corrupt local politicians in the nation got involved. There would be federal racketeering charges placed on the administrators/mayor's office within a year of it opening. You'd be better off letting a group of Afghani warlords run this operation.

I imagine it would be the existing Amtrak station?

Cons:
-Cost
-this may be complete by New Orleans' quadricentennial in 2118 if they broke ground today

If New Orleans continues to be the tourist mecca it currently is, light rail from MSY would be the next logical step.

Inevitably someone is going to argue that the price of a ticket will never fund this. They will say it needs 10000 passengers a day to be viable without government subsidies and that the interstate system is the answer.

They are morons that dont realize that the government subsidizes the interstate system they are championing.

If you think about most tourist cities that do the volume NOLA does, almost all of them have a lightrail from their airport to downtown.

It would be a BIG deal for us, especially with the new Airport. Would help increase tourism, and continue to attract big events.

However, the corruption would be rampant and it would take 20 years.

When I lived in ATL one of the better amenities of the city was being able to take Marta to and from the airport. I would think the main people against this would be the taxi, car rental and parking lot lobbies.

I think it would be a good idea. Then have the cabs at the train stations to bring people the rest of the way.

Gondola system. Ride above the traffic and all you need are a few towers and some steel cable.

Does MARTA still stand for "Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta"?

Not sure, I found the picture in the comments section of a nola.com article about the new apartment development that is going to be built downtown at South Market.

This would be legit but price would be a question and as mentioned numerous times already LA politicians will want to get their hands on the green somehow. Probably would hire their engineer nephew that graduated from Trump University.

Blue Line is dumb. If anything follow the railroad right of way downtown rather than going across the Huey P.

Who wants to take a tram from Kenner through the west bank to get downtown?

I think it would be great.

I'd like to add that the RTA in New Orleans is a pretty well run organization. (I have no idea if they would be directly involved in the project.)

The RTA has added new streetcar lines recently that have been completed on time and under budget (or at least not over budget). Ridership on some of those lines is still a question mark, but they are just spurs at the moment.

A light rail from NO to MSY would get huge ridership. I think it's a no brainer.
