As an educator, I receive a complimentary subscription to the magazine Teaching Tolerance. Over the years I've read a few interesting articles, but disagreed with most. This quarter the magazine included a poster that directs students in sexual identification, gender identity, and other similar talking points. First, I don't think that seventh graders are developed enough psychologically to consider such questions. Second, in my opinion, these things just plant a seed of thought that most of these kids would never have had otherwise. I just wonder how many teachers around the nation are hanging this in their classrooms. As a parent, I'd be pretty upset about it.

You should post a picture of the poster.

So it says gay guys like other guys or what? I think it really depends on how much depth they go into it.

In the last 15 years we went from promoting saving sex until marriage to encouraging middle school kids to be open minded about sex, and it's all to make 2% of the population feel comfortable.

Well, considering they're banging at that age, there is going to be noticeable differences in who likes who and whether so-and-so is weird, so I don't have a problem with it being explained.

My stepdaugther is 13 and in private school and she told me she overheard a girl in her class say she's pansexual. She asked me what it meant. So, I discussed the differences between gender and sexual orientation.

Just tell them God hates tranz people and they'll all rot in the fiery depths of hell. That should end the issue.

Somewhere, there is a democrat politician funneling our tax money into producing this magazine.

Sex Ed is usually introduced at this age, so it seems reasonable that sexual identification would be included in that discussion.

And what qualifications do you hold to make such an assessment? Serious question

Most seventh graders will already have been exposed to these issues outside the classroom so I see nothing wrong with addressing them inside the classroom. It's probably better to have them learn about sexual identification in a structured environment where the issues can be discussed maturely and they can ask questions. Unfortunately, a lot of our educators are ignorant bigots, so that might actually do more harm than good. Sucks.

I think that is unfair. However, they may not be mature enough to have an open discussion amongst peers.

It's interesting how this is now becoming the norm. More and more family shows are introducing openly gay characters. Not as many people view it as a moral issue as they once did.

Gender identity though I find more curious. While homosexuals make up ~3% of our population, non gender conforming individuals make up less than 0.3%. I don't know why such time and energy is now being focused on inclusion for a very small population of people.

I promise you that your 7th graders know more than you think. They all spend a lot of time on the internet. They know.

Uhh, he is a teacher. He interacts with students for a living. I think he might have a leg up on you and most of the population, mate.

The same crowd that denies the existence of God in the name of science and natural order will deny science and natural order in the name of their own emotions and political correctness.

Just like the classroom isn't the right forum for religion, it isn't the right forum for sexual identity.
