I plan on fixing up the landscaping around the house this weekend. I want to put some fresh soil down on top of what's already there.

The guy that originally put down the landscaping when I moved in didn't put any type of weed barrier. I was planning to pull all the weeds that are showing, uproot what's planted now, lay down a weed barrier, replant, and put fresh soil on top.

My question is will I hurt the current plants? Do I need to dig a certain depth below the roots? I'm going to put them right back in the ground.

Pull the weeds. Put down layer of newspaper. Put new soil on top. No need to remove plants.

How bad are the weeds?

You can't put soil down on top of weeds and expect them not to thrive on them.

Depending on how big the plants you woukd like to keep are, you either need to pull the weeds or put down a weed barrier.

What squirrel said. Weed barrier is over rated.

I wouldn't risk damage to the existing plant material.

You have the right idea, dig up the plants with a decent size root ball, pull all the weeds, till in a pre emergent weed preventer, add soil, add more pre emergent, re plant old plants plus any new ones, cover with mulch and water well

Any type of physical barrier such as netting or newspaper will only prevent weeds from below that point and does nothing to stop weed seeds from blowing in and growing, go with a chemical pre emergent, such as snap shot, amaze, preen, etc. put it out heavy, also depending on how much new soil you out in, you could hurt your existing plants by by smothering them if you don't dig them up first

Just cut the weed barrier and pull the plants you want to keep through it.

Cut X's relative to the size of the plant in the weed barrier set in place.

This is not a good idea. You don't want the surrounding soil to be higher than the base of the plants. Depending on how much soil he is putting down, he could potentially create a lot of problems if he doesn't pull up the plants and replant.

Thought about that, but it would be a big arse x and to me, would defeat the purpose. I have some bushes and nice size plants I'don't have to pull through
