Also, why does Starbucks iced coffee suck compared to local coffee shops?
Iced coffee and cold brew are two very different things.
Iced coffee = hot coffee poured over ice
Cold brew = Beans are placed in water for 14 hours to steep; takes longer, much stronger, and less bitter; uses wayyyy more coffee beans and is typically more expensive
Cold brew is higher quality and most local shops should have a decent offering...cold brew has grown dramatically in the last couple of years hence Starbucks arriving to the party.

Been drinking it iced for years, but you're doing it wrong. Double, or triple, espresso on ice is the way to go. Starbucks is glorious, as is any place with a proper espresso machine. They'll put the cup of ice below the spouts of the espresso machine and brew it right into it, or dump it immediately over your ice. Some ice melts, but it chills quickly and they all stops.
No sugar, no milk. Best drink on the planet.

Worst case scenario, McDs has good stuff, no milk or auger syrup. It's double brewed coffee and surprisingly decent.

Just buy the concentrate at the grocery store near the milk. Make it at home, much cheaper.

I buy whole roasted beans which I grind and use for my iced coffee
Ordered a decent burr grinder as well with the OXO, thanks for the tip!

Iced coffee with just coffee and milk is awesome. The flavors go well together without needing to add sugar. I started adding a scoop of chocolate protein powder from time to time. It's pretty damn good.

Take a bag of ground coffee, dump it into a gallon container, fill with cool filtered water. Let steep for 12-24 hours, agitating every few hours or so. Filter, and it will last in the fridge for a week. You'll probably want to dilute it by half. shite is delicious.
This.

Cold brew or GTFO.
You must have no taste buds to drink that bitter crap.
