Are you denying the fact that climate change exists?
This Winter was different than last, so I guess the climate did change.

That last photo is one that worries me. If the emergency spillway overtops again, where you see the grouted rip rap stop and soil begin- that interface could cause big problems.
If scouring continues as it has been, it will undermine the soil supporting it. This could cause it to fail in a number of ways, either by piping and seepage under the emergency spillway, causing an uncontrolled discharge (think Dutch kid putting finger in the earthen dike), or if there's not enough of a shear reaction from the weakened soil, it could cause the emergency spillway to fail structurally due to to high of a moment.
That said their best strategy is to up the discharge on the main spillway as high as possible now and get the water level as low as possible before any further rain happens. Also get the turbines in the main dam up and running again will help too.
Any further use of the emergency spillway is a danger to those in the valley.

Found this gem this morning...
Yikes. That's approaching criminal negligence. I would hate to be the guy that stamped that design. If this thing fails I suspect he'll be in front of a jury.

Bill Croyle, the acting director of the Department of Water Resources, said Monday that he was “not sure anything went wrong. This was a new, never-happened-before event."
But during 2005 relicensing proceedings for Oroville Dam, several environmental groups argued that substantial erosion would occur on the hillside in the event of a significant emergency spill. In a filing, they asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to order the state to “to armor or otherwise reconstruct the ungated spillway.”
State Water Project contractors, including the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, were involved in the relicensing. MWD General Manager Jeffrey Kightlinger said Monday his agency deferred to the state and federal agencies on the matter.
“They did look at that issue and they determined that [the existing emergency spillway] did meet the appropriate FERC guidelines,” Kightlinger said. “In the FERC guidelines, they talk about how you don’t put a lot of funding and concrete, etc. into emergency spillways because presumably they will rarely if ever be used.”

Not surprising though. Until you see it or experience it it's hard to imagine what water is capable of.

those fricking California commies

While I don't think it was the Commies/subversives in the California government who caused the damage, I found this picture interesting:
I really hope there wasn't damage that wasn't fixed. Especially when there was a drought going on (you know, when operation of the spillway wasn't a pressing need).
Then again, remember that the state agencies (who would have had to pay) disagreed with the petitions for concreting the emergency spillway when the dam was up for a new permit in 2005.

This is either a letdown of epic proportions or colossal clusterfrick when the rains resume later this week.

They went as far as sending out mass messages of IMMINENT DAM FAILURE WITHIN 1 HOUR a couple days ago. Maybe it really was that close and some brilliant engineer or sheer luck saved the day

I cannot wait to see what that spillway hole looks like after the water stops flowing. Looks absolutely massive now

Better to say "ZOMG EVERYBODY PANIC!!!!!!!" and be wrong than to say it's nothing and drown thousands of people when the dam is breached.

I mean honestly they probably didn't know for sure if it was gonna fail or not, what are they supposed to say "ehhhh the damn MIGHT fail......might be a good idea to leave but whatever. Your call"
No, they can't say that. Much better safe than sorry in this situation
