Here's what Landrieu's office said Monday afternoon: "Mayor Landrieu has discussed with 2018 Tricentennial Commission members how we can appropriately recognize our 300-year history as a city while also looking to the future and helping New Orleans become the city we always knew she could be. Part of this process should include a close examination of the historical symbols throughout our city and what changes could be made as we approach 2018, including the Robert E. Lee statute in Lee Circle. These symbols say who we were in a particular time, but times change. Yet these symbols – statues, monuments, street names, and more – still influence who we are and how we are perceived by the world. Mayor Landrieu believes it is time to look at the symbols in this city to see if they still have relevance to our future."

Black bums sleep on that statue too. Removing it is racist.

Dear Louisiana,

Take a lesson from Mississippi for once and just don't give a damn what other people or states think about you.

Mississippi has a lot of terrible politicians and other things. But I do sometimes like how they are hardheaded and tell people outside the state pressuring them to do things they don't want to to "frick off"

There are litereally hundreds on top of hundreds of roadways in that city could have the money allocated to them that it would cost to "examine landmarks" in the city because of some inflated sensitivity to what some lunatic decided to do in Charleston.

Make it stop.

What about Jackson Square?

Why don't we just rip up everything and start over with historic African names?

Yep, pulling down a statue will solve every problem.

Worked last time.

Silly mayor. Unless they replace the statue with Bruce or Stan they'll have to change the name if the circle.

I wonder how many of NOLA's finest inner city folk actually know who Robert E. Lee is?

If I could snuff that entire family out and all it cost me was a pinky, I'd cut both off just to be sure.

Yep, forget getting more police to fight crime or fixing all the terrible streets or blighted areas around town. Nope, none of that is important. Let's argue about a statue that's been there for 130 years instead.
