1 cent on sales for eight months to fund a new terminal building.

I don't have much of a dog in the fight, but given the steady growth in enplanements and the booming oil and gas industry, I think this is necessary.
What has me more curious is whether this will allow LFT to better compete with Acadiana Regional for Offshore helicopter work.

As someone who has flown out of LFT multiple times, I fully support this tax.

I love flying out of Lafayette, can leave my house an hour before departure and still not be rushed
More direct flights would be nice but I can always drive to Houston if needed

I'm for it.
Hopefully, the public votes for it on Dec 6.

I can back this. More airport improvements = more flights = cheaper prices (hopefully).
There is a new daily direct to Denver now as well.

Political Board.
Why would you support a tax on everyone in order to pay for something that very few people use? Why not pass a use fee for airlines and rental cars? Charge those who actually use it, not those who don't.

Because by expanding the airports potential revenues, you expand the amounts of sales tax collected, which benefits everyone in the parish. I think you should take a look at the economic benefit the airport brings to the Lafayette area. The entire community reaps the benefits therefore they go back to the community for assistance when needed.
I can get behind things like this as long as there are locktight measures in place making sure the funds are handles correctly and stopped immediately at the funding amount being reached. That, and along with very public/transparent bidding process with NO political deal to some friend of a contractor bullshite.

I think this is going to be the biggest benefit, added capacity. I do not think you will see many new routes that do not serve the oil gas industry, but what the airport will see is an increase in capacity, larger jets flying in. Not saying 737s but you go from a 50-seat RJ to a 76-seater that has a first class cabin, maybe some additional frequencies, but I wouldn't count on much there. Fares are going up nationwide, but like you learn in any econ class, once you add in more supply (capacity) upward pressure on fares will be relieved.

100% disagree with you. Airport funding should be financed through use of municiple bonds, repaid over time using Facility Use Fees charged to passengers, carriers, transportation services and other services that USE the airport. DFW Airport is undergoing a $2 Billion renovation paid for this way.

I wonder if the local Tea Party groups will take a position on this..
Posted on 6/19/14 at 9:35 am to HubbaBubba
Because the entire region benefits from having a greater capacity at the airport.

Same reason you give big plants tax breaks to build their facilities in your town. Without capital, you ain't shite. And money will not come to a place with a crappy airport.

They need a 50 cent sales tax to bring LFT out of the 80's.

Travel a lot for business. Lafayette's airport, based on the population and economic power, is embarrassing. Flying in with the family in July. My hometown airport in Bloomington Il (Area population 150K) is much, much better.
