Instead of just filling in the potholes and maintaining a very busy inner city thoroughfare, they literally think that by putting in a turning lane and some bike lanes (lol) they can make Government Street into Baton Rouge's Magazine Street. Their words. Just ignore the fact that Magazine Street is in the middle of a walkable city and surrounded by numerous internationally renowned neighborhoods. Nah, if they just put in a turning lane on fricking Government, Mid City BR will instantly become just like Uptown NOLA.

It's just such a maddeningly backwards way of looking at the city. The only saving grace of the project is that like the Airline toll road I doubt it will ever happen.

Where do they think all the traffic is going to go?

How many taxpayer dollars were wasted coming up with this cockamamie plan?

Magazine street was the dividing line between hood and wealth years ago.

These government types love their bike lanes.

Nevermind only hipsters and old black guys ride bikes in BR.

No idea how to solve this problem. If you put in a turn lane in the middle of the street, what happens when someone wants to turn right? You're still stuck slowing down until that person is done turning. If you keep it how it is now, there's people constantly weaving in and out of lanes to avoid the people turning right or left, but at least traffic keeps moving. It's really a lose lose

I live off of govt and really like the idea. All the traffic would be pushed to North St as it is built for traffic going downtown.

Also it would encourage businesses to invest in landscape and curb appeal. My reasoning is that bars and restaurants are already coming into the area. It would be nice if traffic wasn't jammed into the area. Slow everyone down. Make another route preferable

People are creatures of habit. Everyone will still take government

All the traffic is going to get pushed into the neighborhoods. No one's ultimate destination is north of government. Why would they drive north just to drive back south again immediately after?

All I know is that this a staged part of a design. When I saw the design a decade ago I liked it. There are several other main roads people could use to get to their homes.

Change is hard... look further than the initial complaints on things that havent even happened yet.

Good news:
It will get the left turners out of the travel lanes.

Bad news:
Everyone will be stuck behind the 50,000,000 CATS busses that run down Government Street.

The problem is that most of those parallel roads dead-end around Foster. Government is the only street other than Florida that runs from Downtown to Lobdell without dead-ending.

How is traffic from 5 laned Jefferson Hwy going to get to North street? Oh and bad news for the OP, this will definitely happen and a whole lot sooner than the BUMP.

But North Street dead-ends at Foster...
