Kids Wearing Shorts in the Winter?

See this Today show topic circulating on FB: LINK
Basically kids are wearing shorts in cold weather. Some doctors say parents should make kids wear pants b/c of hypothermia.
I figure when the kid is cold enough they'll put on long pants. I typically wear shorts on the weekend during the day no matter how cold it is. My legs usually don't register the cold as much as my core & upper body. I'll wear a fleece jacket or something though.
The best part of the FB link are all the morons going on about how their kid can make his clothing decision when he pays for his own insurance since he'll be getting sick.
I forgot that you can't get sick when wearing long pants and a parka

In high school every boy wore shorts every single day no matter the temperature because wearing the uniform pants was a death sentence.

How do they get cold if they are inside on Facebook?

I wear shorts and my fleece also.
I don't like jeans. And I only wear slacks to work or when we go out.
Don't care.

I was under the impression that cold and/or wet weather leading to sickness was mostly and old wives' tale. I believe the original tale began because cold/rainy weather tends to force more people indoors which means more people are around one another and sicknesses travel much easier between people.
I could be completely wrong, however.

Pretty sure you are completely right.

90% right. PBS article says that scientists believe cold weather weakens the immune defenses in the nose. Doesn't completely prove or disprove anything, but it is a promising for the "cold causes colds" school of thought.

I've seen many younger people at football games who are way under-dressed. They always look like they're freezing their arse off. My guess is they are completely oblivious in all aspects of life.

And saw a ball boy in Denver today during the NFL game wearing shorts.

My nephews wear shorts and t shirts every day regardless of weather.

I didn't have uniforms in high school, but in elementary school, if you were a male who wore the uniform shorts, you might as well just go relegate yourself to the most remote corner of the playground and stare at the fence.

Future soccer figs based on foot wear alone

Eh, baseball, basketball, and football players dress like that too. I hate the look, not that I care about what 12 year olds wear

I argue with the wife every winter about this. She's convinced that cold weather = the cold. I just laugh.

It's a rule in school that if the "feels like" is colder than freezing you can't do outside recess.
if my kids are throwing a fit about wearing leggings or pants I tell them to go ahead and freeze

Maybe we should have government regulations on dress codes?
How about public uniforms?
Because after all, if one person is cold, everyone is cold. Right?

Same here and I'm almost 60. I'll have fleece jacket, hat and gloves with shorts and tennis shoes. I know when it gets too cold for shorts which in South Louisiana is mostly 4 days a year.

My 15 year old spent the night with his friend this Saturday. He popped his head in before he left to tell me goodbye. I asked of he has packed clothes and toiletries, etc. I neglected to ask what kind of clothes he packed. He walked home yesterday in shorts and a tshirt. I could have killed him. Ever since starting junior high, both of my 2 oldest wear shorts anytime they can get away with it. And never have a coat. My oldest says they make him "look fat." He's 6'3", 155 lbs. Kids are stupid. And being warm apparently isn't cool.
