Kids in E.T. movie vs. Kids today

Saw E.T. recently. The scene when all of the neighborhood kids got on their bikes to escape the Feds and bring E.T. to safety struck me.
All of those kids could ride their bikes with reckless abandon, and knew all of the short cuts through houses, back yards, streets, fences, ditches, and canals--which helped them to avoid the bad guys chasing them. In addition, they could ride their bikes at full speed for quite some time without tiring. I certainly remember knowing those same shortcuts through my neighborhood--where the holes in fences were, which houses didn't have fences between them, where to cut across a canal or ditch, etc.
I get the feeling that if E.T. had to rely on today's kids to help him escape, he would quickly end up on an autopsy table in Area 51.
Oh, and get off my lawn!

Can the ET kids construct vacuum powered baseball retrieval devices in an afternoon?
The Sandlot kids eat ET kids for breakfast son.

They would have gotten picked up for not having adult supervision. Handed over to CPS, then taken from the tPOS parents.

The cops would have shot ET and several kids, then went and shot the kids' dogs.

quote:well the cops/FBI would have shot those kids dead in the street today, so ET would be fricked either way
