Keep in mind this was YEARS AGO, but a friend of mine had a Jetta and it literally fell apart. The door panels, the radio, everything was falling apart. The engine needed constant maintenance.

I have a 2014 Forte and I love it, and the Optima is even better.

Kia's stepped up their game in the last 5ish years.

I've had a Jetta for a year and a half and I love it. No complaints. I don't know anything about the Optima though.

Any other compact? Consider a Toyota Corolla. Toyotas just run and run and run.

Sometimes they do it by themselves too.

Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Don't care as much for the look of the Camry but when it comes to mid-size sedans, those top the class.

Also consider the Hyundai Sonata (same engine and frame as the optima) fit and finish is a little better in the Sonata.

Didn't look at the VWs because I didnt want to drive to NOLA for service.

Oil changes on my wifes Santa Fe are $42 @ the dealership.

I debated both of those as well as the sonata, fusion, and accord. I chose the accord in the end because the Korean cars lose value quickly and I really liked the interior of the accord.

SEL. I wanted the TDI engine, but SEL package. Ended up going with the SEL. Sport mode is fun, but I do miss my manual while using it.

I just bought a Jetta TDI value edition with a 6spd manual and love it. 60mpg is easy on long trips and it's a nice car. Was a little north of $20k out the door brand new.

It's a really nice car compared to other base-level cars, but don't let the fuel mileage go to your head. You'll eat your fuel savings in maintenance. The difference is you get a pretty nice car that's very fun to drive, unlike the kia's and Hondas of the world.
