Sounds like someone is playing a bar game I invented called Text Time.
Basically, everyone puts money in and an area code and, if you want to, the first three numbers of a phone number are selected. So, in chicago it would be 312-640-XXXX. Then everyone would populate the last four numbers randomly and send whatever text they want to to that number. First one to get a response wins the pot.
You can keep sending to new numbers if people hit dead numbers. A friend of mine a few years back got some horny teenager and was sending him cleav picks. Funny stuff.
