Really. Five years to build a case and the DA went to trial with this guy as a star witness?

Not surprised. The dna they retrieved from the crime scene didn't match either defendant. And the prosecutions jailbird witness wasn't very credible to begin with since he was "drunk and on pills" the night of the murder.
