This sentence certainly doesn't fit the crime. Nobody forces people to buy/abuse drugs. Legalize and regulate it, but don't waste taxpayer's money on putting a guy behind bars for 50 years for a nonviolent drug charge.

Well it was PWITD Heroin and, if you read the article, this is in reaction to the escalating OD rate in Baton Rouge. Basically they are saying that heroin isn't pot and you are going to prison for dealing something that is killing people regularly.

Not saying the sentence is fair but laws are laws.

If you want them changed then keep trying until then if someone breaks said law then they deserve the consequences.

I'm not arguing against legalization just that because you don't like a law or think it should be a law doesn't mean you can break it without consequence

They already have legal heroin & it has brought us to where we are now.

Does it feel better than sex? Sure. But they need to extinguish that shite.

People say heroin is a gateway drug, but I just don't see it.

Portugal did it, and it's been successful.

Not at all.
Absolutely no reason we shouldn't.
Our failed prohibition has caused far more harm than an attempt to regulate it would.

Portugal decriminalized it.
Big difference.

Actually, Portugal decriminalized all drugs.

Putting people in prison for an extensive period of time for nonviolent drug offenses hasn't worked, and it won't work. The proof is in the pudding that the "war on drugs" has failed. If someone chooses to abuse drugs and overdoses then it's their fault.

What's the downfall of making heroin legal?

I don't care what they legalize, as long as not a single dime of taxpayer money is used on scraping you off the payment, driving you to the hospital, and providing you with medical treatment (or any social welfare benefit) as a result of your actions.

Yea this is similar to the GHB epidemic. Clinton even got involved and urged states to up the penalties for possession and distribution as well as clamped down on the ingredients to make it. Used to be able to buy all that shite at a hardware store and make a gallon with 1/10 of the skill needed to make meth and no risk of dying.

That's also why GHB was $20 a 20oz bottle back then and is $150 a 2oz bottle now. Damned Date Rapers.

No why?

Imagine what Drano would do if you ingested that. It is legal. In fact many things that would kill you if ingested is legal. Do you really the government to make those things illegal to keep you from partaking?

Look, I understand that people are going to be able to get their hands on it & use it regardless if it's legal or not. But I'd also like to believe the legal repercussions (as well as health effects) is what deters most sane people from getting involved with a drug like heroin.

Which almost always involves other drugs, usually benzos and/or alcohol.

50 years for a drug charge is fricking ludicrous and criminal in itself. I'd like to see this judges campaign donations.
