And I guess DC residents would also get zero federal benefits as well?
FWIW most of the federal workers live in VA and MD...

I'd believe that from my visits. You've been cracking me up in this thread though

Disagree It would only be beneficial to dems plus the state of DC would be too powerful.

The cost up there is outrageous. My wife's family is from the area.

Of course, the side benefit of being in the DC area is you didn't go through the recession quite like other areas of the country with the way federal spending goes, so that may level that out a bit.

I've heard a few interesting arguments regarding DC statehood and "negotiations"

One of them is returning the land in VA back to DC, thereby probably turning "new" Virginia back to a red state.

It's interesting, but I don't think it happens

This fact rustles my jimmies every time it is mentioned.

well there are still plenty of Mcmansions for sale in Loudoun County that are 200k cheaper than they were 10 years ago

Which is why some sort of retrocession would be the only real practical, viable solution if the people of DC really wanted it.

they could solve this issue easily by just exempting DC residents from paying federal income taxes...

That would essentially make DC nothing more than a landlocked Cayman Islands, which would likely drop the amount of federal funding it receives for federal programs. DC would suffer.

Hey, I didn't say it was bulletproof

The wife's neighbors bought right before the crash. I think that is about what they "lost" about 6 months after purchase.

Yeah, I'd bet the benefit of those tax revenues Richmond receives from the DC suburbs outweighs the red vs. blue potential for giving those DC suburbs to a new DC state.

What about letting DC residents vote in Maryland for Federal elections?

Well, they aren't citizens of Maryland, and they don't pay Maryland taxes. I wouldn't like that.

If mobility was prohibited, then it would be truly unfair. Everyone knows the rules. FWIW I was a DC resident for 6 years.

because so much of the population is on the "other team" you want to deny them voting representation in Congress.

I mainly don't want people whose subsidence is dependent on the government to have an equal say in how that government spends money. I would prefer if the votes of people who pay into the federal tax system (not federal employees) count more than people who don't pay.
