It would take a Constitutional amendment to make DC a state. I don't know why people take an English comedian's views on American politics seriously.

You say the bolded part like it is some mind-blowing statement that has never been though about before. The Constitution has been amended before, and I'm sure the people in the statehood movement have given that part some thought.

DC will not get statehood, but will get Congressional representation at some point

Just because you keep saying this doesn't make it true. Had anyone here even mentioned this outside of one post?

I feel like John Oliver usually offers up a good argument for/against something in this segment, but I don't think he did a good job of explaining the stance of the opponents to DC statehood. I wasn't familiar with this issue beforehand so I felt like it was lacking in that department.

Do you know how hard it is to have a constitutional amendment passed? Especially in today's world?

No DC should not be a state. The whole purpose of having the capital in DC is so that it isn't in a state.

Of course a liberal and a foreigner wouldn't care that.

It still wouldn't solve the issue of a single state being responsible for the security and operations of the federal government.

It is inherently wrong for the representatives of every state and territory in the United States to conduct their representation under a single state's laws. It is essentially giving one state in the union the most power, and that is completely undemocratic. Not to mention that absorbing the District of Columbia into Maryland and changing the District's laws would be a monumental (no pun intended) clusterfrick.

I saw this mentioned elsewhere...why not give the land back to Maryland and just make DC a city in Maryland? Do we need a special district for our capital on 2015?

I would support this. They actually already did it with the Virginia side.

Yeah it does make it true, that's how truth works. Apparently you never took a class on poli sci or debate.

Why not just cede the primarily residential areas back to Maryland and keep the areas with the White House, The Capital, and the Supreme Court in a more compact District? It wouldn't be perfect, but could it work? You'd have DC, Maryland and DC, the federal district.
