quote:
Imagine an athlete whose entire ethos is helping others.
He speaks about it incessantly in interviews and prides himself on doing the right thing, to the point where doing the right thing more or less becomes his public persona. He ensures that his employers brand all his merchandise accordingly, and every time he competes he makes sure to chuck multiple items of his game-worn gear into the crowd. Oftentimes, those go to kids, which makes sense; they adore him and he goes very far out of his way to meet with and spend time with them, perhaps a hundred times in a given year.
He does not attribute any of this to religious reasons or any other agenda; there is no accompanying rider about why anyone should ascribe to his personal belief system. He does it because he thinks it's the right thing to do and it makes him happy to help other people. There is very little skepticism about all of this, either: it is almost universally accepted that little to none of this is bullshite and that our athlete is, in fact, a pretty swell guy. On top of this, he happens to be among the very best in his sport, someone who works exceedingly hard to elevate his actual performance—which was once lacking—to a level on par with his fame. This athlete would be the paragon of everything society wants its athletes to be.
Such an athlete exists. His name is John Cena, and people fricking hate him.
quote:
The wider world, doesn't know much about this. Cena has a broad reach, but wrestling's place in the zeitgeist ain't what it was around the turn of the century, when The Rock was hosting Saturday Night Live and starring in The Scorpion King while still working as an active wrestler; until this year, Cena's biggest non-wrestling commercial success was the k-list action flick The Marine. 2015 has changed things in a big way, first through Cena's one-off appearance on Parks and Recreation and now with a fairly well-regarded role in Trainwreck, the new Amy Schumer vehicle. This week, perhaps not-so-coincidentally, Cena cracked SportsCenter as part of its My Wish series, which makes sense given that Cena is the runaway record-holder for most requests fulfilled for the Make A Wish Foundation— the astonishing tally is over 460, and counting.* Everything is in place for mainstream America to love John Cena, genetically engineered He-Man with a heart and a sense of humor, a mountainous man who can be trusted to utter the perfect soundbyte at the optimal time without any cause for dread at what lurks underneath that Lysol-clean exterior.
His constituency in pro wrestling, on the other hand, mostly wants him to go away.

Not much of a wrestling fan anymore, but Cena is an awesome guy.

He was pretty good in Trainwreck. When he was banging Amy Shumer and trying to talk dirty, that was funny as hell.

I don't even watch wrestling and I think he's a great guy. The Chive makes it a point to comment on his make-a-wish visits pretty regularly.
After hearing from some knowledge wrestling fans on the schedule these guys go through, it's amazing that he's able to do it... much less at a record breaking pace.

I like Cena even back when he was rapping and a heel in his earlier wrestling days.
He is a good dude.

same phenomenon as Lebron.
Yet people worship athletes who are derelicts, wife beaters, rapists, murderers (alleged), drug dealers, etc.

Nothing worse than a celebrity who does nice things for others and constantly forces the media to put him in the limelight for it.
If you really care about people you would do things and not broadcast it to make you look like some type of Jesus figure. This guy has a God complex and it's sad.

Cena and LeBron were the funniest people in Trainwreck, in my opinion.

Are you serious?? He's just recently been put in the least bit of limelight. He has over 400 Make A Wishes granted.. Do you really remember reading 400+ articles for each one?
People will bitch about absolutely anything

Wrestling fans do not like his character in the ring, not outside of it. Its the same as hating the russian in Rocky 4, not the actor.

Your opinion is bonk. Lebron was awful in Trainwreck

Get Cena's dick out of your mouth for a second....he's a celebrity with a shite load of money (Net worth of $35 million), these donations are a drop in the bucket for him.
He's clearly using this for his own personal gratification - getting women, feeling like God, etc. It's a power trip and you know it.
If he really cared he'd give away half of his earnings to cancer research or something really significant, then I'd say he really cares.
Just no need to showboat about being "charitable" and at the same time RICH AS F

He also constantly brings kids on stage at events like Raw.....after the cameras are off. He brought Cesaro on stage weeks ago....after the cameras were off because he wanted to give the guy who has been constantly screwed and overlooked by Vince recognition for the incredible performer he is.
And lol....yeah he needs to give 90% of his earnings to cancer research or he's just a phony. I honestly bet he gives a shite ton. He just doesnt broadcast or brag about it.
