There are also a couple of really nice private school options. Holy Ghost in Hammond for kindergarten-8th or St. Joseph in Ponchatoula for Kindegarden- 8th. St. Thomas in Hammond is a good academic school with competitive athletics in 2A. Ponchatoula public schools are probably not what they used to be, but they are pretty good schools. The city of Ponchatoula has a great small town feel to it and I enjoyed growing up here very much.

Maybe instead of moving you should build a time machine and go back to 1865.

Today's Yankees are much harder to tolerate but like the 1865 ones, they think if they come south to stay, we're ok with it.

We're not.

Ponchatoula just had an undefeated regular season and lost to eventual state champ Acadiana in the playoffs.

Plenty of good area to live along the Northshore all the to Denham. I would avoid the Hammond public schools. Ponchy public schools are good. Why commute when everything is here. I couldn't say this in the past put currently Ponchatoula High has the best athletics in this area. Anything you want to know or need to find out let me know. Will help all I can ponchytiger@yahoo.com

I'm from pumpkin center, went to ponchatoula schools, and now live in Hammond. With the way the NAACP has hit Tangi parish with the deseg saga, Hammond not has the best schools in the parish. Thanks to the extra property taxes that passed to
Make every school in Hammond a magnet school, with different curriculums at the junior/high school level, IB programs, etc. (btw I was not and still not in favor of the taxes because I don't think making one school district better makes the entire parish better).

My daughter will go to Holy Ghost and saint Thomas, but if I had to I have no issue putting her through Hammond now. Unfortunatly these new Hammond programs killed the once great ponchatoula school district.

St. Thomas Aquinas is your best bet for high school. Years ago Ponchy high would have been a good choice, but not anymore. Tuition is pricey, but it is a solid education and the sports are good for a 2a school. I have a 14 year old there so I'm speaking from experience.

It is full of Yankees that have moved down driving up the cost of homes, the food SUCKS, and they tax you to death up here...ever heard of personal property tax? Did I mention how liberal this place is? I am a southerner and this state is not southern in 2015...time to try and get back home to real people.

All of this is almost completely accurate.

Surprisingly, Springfield is a great education by Louisiana standards and a decent town to live in if in the right neighborhood.

I grew up in Pumpkin Center, went to Ponchatoula public schools and graduated from PHS. I don't live there anymore but from what I've heard the schools aren't what they used to be. PHS used to be one of the best public schools in the area, academically, but they've starting busing kids in from out of the school district because the NAACP has supposedly been harassing the superintendent because there weren't enough minorities at PHS.

St Thomas Aquinas is your best bet for the area. Good academics and competitive in all sports. i was there 2007-2011. we won a soccer, womens and mens basketball state championship in my time there. also had a football season where our only loss was to john curtis in the playoffs. as far as private schools go not that expensive 5k~ a year.
