First time in 41 years I grow a full beard. Had a job interview (medical field/nursing) and went with the beard. The job will have NO OR component. I shave neck line and upper cheeks, and did so the morning of interview, so it was not unruly. Also length is not an issue. It was 1/2" max.

Did not get the job. I have a ridiculous amount of experience, and the interview went as well as any I have been on.

What say the OT. Boss an old biddy? Beards have become fairly routine over the last couple years. Are beards a deal breaker? Any of you notice this? I am not married to this beard? It can go.

Or...

Someone else was better qualified.

It's likely more than your beard, unless you were interviewing to be the nurse for the Yankees.

I have no problem with beards. It's all about your skill set.

Then again, I'm a rational person.

Well here's the thing.

Nobody will interview you and say "man if he only had a beard id hire him"

Somebody might say "damn he's a good fit but he looks like rugaroo"

Just shave. You can grow it back if the job allows.

while it may not project the most professional image, I don't think simply having a beard would disqualify you from getting a job...I would say that either someone else came along who was more qualified or that politics entered the picture and you lost out...

But my "normal" is a stasche and goatee. Rocking that since 1996 for gods sake. This was not a management position either.

Yah think? A beard in a job interview is basically saying to the interviewer "frick authority". It's a terrible idea to go into an interview with a beard unless you're in IT.

To be honest, I think its a bigger problem for a subordinate to have a beard than the manager to. The manager usually isn't the one going in front of customers, it's you who is doing that.

My point is, going into an interview with a beard says this. Depending on your work environment, working with a beard isn't this necessarily. Some people can pull it off, but a beard in an interview can rub some people the wrong way.

Every male medical equipment rep. has a beard. No job is more appearance based. Their scrubs are starched. The women all have fake racks.

I'm assuming that means it didn't go well since you didn't get the job.
