James Carville wants to name LSU Parade Grounds after Union General

Sherman to be exact. Who was the first head of LSU but then went on to burn the South to the ground. Thoughts?

Before his famous “March to the Sea,” scorched earth warfare during the Civil War and outright refusal to run for president, William Tecumseh Sherman in 1860 became the first superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy – now known as Louisiana State University.
It also was a name he despised for a school he dearly loved, only to leave the following year and join the Union army after the war began. LSU bears no formal memorial to its first leader. In fact, to some in the Deep South, his name is an insult to their ancestors.
But national political commentator and LSU alumnus James Carville, along with Jonathan Earle, dean of LSU’s Honors College, hope to preserve his legacy at the university and have started a campaign to rename the Parade Ground in his honor.

Only if flaming torches burn forever to light it up

He, like many dems of his generation, used to be somewhat moderate but has gone overboard in our bizzaro political climate of today.

I guess it depends on if he burned your family's house down and looted their belongings.

I certainly hope Carville has run a complete background on Sherman. Heaven forbid if the man made any unflattering comments about Indians, blacks, or some other preferential group, as Carville will be tarred for making the suggestion.

Sherman was a POS
James Carville needs to stick to his "what Obama's dick tastes like" class at Tulane and leave LSU alone.

Fine with me, name it after a winner, of which there are few on LSU's campus.

I can think of worse alternatives.
But why change something that isn't broke?
ETA: In this day and age you could easily have people like that Clarke Perkins and her ilk bitch that it be named for trash like Alton Sterling and F King may oblige.

Do you consider the founding fathers to be traitors? They did rebel from the crown.

Sherman would have gotten rid of Les Miles quicker and he would have never hired Johnny Jones.
Motion approved.

Personally I would support it, based on some brief reading. It sounds like he was a capable administrator for LSU and generally a pretty stand up dude.
Here's a pretty cool quote from Sherman:
Here's a pretty cool quote from Sherman:
quote:
You people of the South don't know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don't know what you're talking about. War is a terrible thing! You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it... Besides, where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth—right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.[31]
