Thermostat went out last night and I have to stop on the way home from work today to buy a new one. Been eyeballing the Nest for a while and heard some good reviews on it. Is it really worth $250? I see Honeywell has a compatible one too. Anything out there as good for less money?

I don't know (first reading of it from your post) but it looks and seems pretty badass. I wish I'd seen it before I had ADT install theirs (allows me to control temp remotely, isn't otherwise all that adaptive).

The Tech board has more info. I went with the Honeywell touch screen model and like it a lot. The knock to the nest is its +/- 3 degree range for me.

They're pretty sweet, had one for about 4 months and it's cut back on my entergy bill once it learned my routine.

Yes almost every major manufacture makes one that is compatible in some sort of way to the Nest now. A couple years ago Nest was the only way to go. But now you have more options available.
I have a nest and love it and would buy one again if need be. To me it looks the best and a 2 year old could operate it its so easy.

My wife and I have been looking at either the Nest or the Honeywell one as well. I told her last night that I didn't think our thermostat was in a good place in our house for a Nest since it's supposed to "learn" your behavior and adjust according to when you aren't home. Our thermostat is located right next to the master suite and in general, we aren't back there during the day, so I think it would "learn" that we are gone even when we're home on Saturdays. I'm leaning towards the Honeywell.

But is it worth the money? I realize the savings are going to change from household to household, but how long will it take to recoup the $250 investment. Is it truly dropping your utility bill 10%, 20% or whatever people may claim?

This is one of my exact concerns with it. Our thermostat is also located in the hall way going past the master bedroom. There's very little traffic in this area of the house, especially during the day. Not sure how well it would learn our routines being out of the way of traffic.

My wife and kids are home for the summer, so I'm not sure how good a programmable one would be right now. But I'm thinking about replacing ours come fall.

Go with the pros
.. Honeywell touchscreen WiFi $70 amazon marketplace and never look back.

These are tanks and in use in many high end offices all over the world.

Form should follow function.. You need a screen you can read at night period. You don't need $250 color led nest crap.

Eta I've raved about these on the tech board you get the same Honeywell app all their units use and your can tie it into wink and other home automaton systems.

Eta2 nest gives you nothing Honeywell can't do better.

Will the Honeywell learn patterns to help reduce my electricity bill?

If the Nest is in a hallway that is seldom used how does it detect you are home?

nest is a whole lotta hype wrapped around mediocre electronics. its a damn thermostat. its not your cell phone or TV you stare at all day long so being full color is stupid and adds no functionality.

honeywell is..well..fricking honeywell.

Check out the ecobee 3 smart thermostat. It comes with remote sensors that detect which rooms you are in and averages the temperature based on where you are in your house. It comes with one extra sensor and you can buy others. I've had mine a month now and love it.

Honeywell research activities are directed toward the discovery and development of new products, technologies and processes and the development of new uses for existing products. The company's principal research and development activities are in the U.S., India, Europe and China.

In the years from 2008 to 2014, Honeywell spent the following on R&D activities (company-funded):
2014: $1,892 million, or 4.7% of total revenues
2013: $1,804 million, or 4.6% of total revenues
2012: $1,847 million, or 4.9% of total revenues
2011: $1,799 million, or 4.9% of total revenues
2010: $1,450 million, or 4.5% of total revenues
2009: $1,321 million, or 4.3% of total revenues
2008: $1,543 million, or 4.2% of total revenues

Customer-sponsored R&D activities (principally the U.S. Government) amounted to an additional $1,034 million, $969 million and $835 million in 2014, 2013 and 2012, respectively.

But but, my Nest most closely resembles an Apple product....so it's much much better than the crap you're peddling.

ETA: Haven't had one problem with my Nest either.
