I was watching goodfellas the other day and wondered about how they recruit members nowadays. I looked up some of the families and all of the leadership looks to be in their 60s or older. I can't imagine there are many young Italian kids still rushing up to join these days. Seems like a Shriners club for wise guys.

No, very much alive.

They took a hit recently, but are not dead.

I doubt they exist like they used to but I'd imagine the stronger families still have quite a bit of pull tho. Either way I'd be shocked to think the mafia could stay as organized and together in today's times.

I figure the kids of most made men in the five families are pretty well off and went to college.

ETA: why live that life if you aren't poor?

As many people can trace their heritage back to a mafia family as European and Native American royal ancestry.

FACT.

Rudy deported all Italians back to their homeland in the mid 90's. That's what you do to an ethnic scourge.

Lots of street level guys are just hustlers making ends meet through illegal means.

Power. Humans of all stripe have some desire or lust for power, to be able to control other humans. It's as old as original sin, and we will always have it with us.

Not dead but way, way less prominent than the goodfellas era.

They changed their name from the mafia to the government.

Absolutely. I don't think it is dead by any means, but between more wealth, legit businesses, higher education, the Feds, and a changing world, I don't think it has the appeal it once had (but it will never die in NYC and Italy).

Well Clinton was damn close to making it in the White House only a couple of weeks ago. If that isn't organized crime, I don't know what is...

Maybe you should mind your own business, OP. Maybe you shouldn't worry about it.
