Is the idea of eternal life appealing to you?

Religious thread. I'm a wanna be agnostic. I have a pretty scientific brain that doesn't work well on faith. Grew up Presbyterian, in church every Sunday and all that.

As I grew older, I lost my faith to no fault or blame on anything... just happened.

Anyway, eternal life in Heaven for all Christians (or whichever of the 4,200 religions you may partake in). Think about existing for eternity. Eternity. Never ever ending. Does the thought of being around that long bother you?

My wife and I were talking about this the other day. I would rather not exist after death, similar to before birth I guess, than be around for quadrillions of trillions of gazillions of years. The only idea that I could come up that I would support eternal life is that when we die, our concept of time changes or goes away.

Otherwise, eternal life will get damn boring...

Figured this is a more "fun" religious discussion that the real ones.

I thought this was the idea proposed in the bible... its eternal life in a perfect world... not the world you see today. No time, no pain, no anguish.

I would if it was a late lunch, say around 1:30. I'd keep checking my phone for the time, which is annoying in itself.

I've begun to dwell on death and dying lately. Perhaps it's part of a midlife crisis.

The thought of death being final and losing all consciousness terrifies me.

I feel like we're all souls occupying human bodies, and our souls are recycled after we die, and we are born again.

Thank you.

Thinking about that is one of my biggest brain-bogglers.

Seriously, think about it. What happens to our consciousness when we die?

When we sleep, we dream, but we also eventually wake up. So that's not really a mystery. When we are knocked unconscious, or go into a coma, when we awake it's like no time ever passed while we were out (I've never been in a coma, but I'd assume it's like being unconscious or sleeping).

But when we die, what happens? We're dead, so we can't dream. We won't wake up, so there's nothing to "wake up to."

Surely, we can't be conscious of our own non-existence...or can we?

In other words, the idea of our consciousness "disappearing" when we die is just as mind-boggling to me as the concept of life after death is.

I think you'd have to not like temporal life very much to find eternal life unappealing.

Have you seen the movie Arrival? It was very moving, and it made me wonder if eternal life is to some extent simply timelessness.

Most people really can't fathom the idea of "not existing." For that reason, I don't think you'll feel that much differently about "living" in Heaven as opposed to on Earth other than you won't be sad, get sick, or get injured.

I would imagine there's quite a bit to see and do where you're not going to get bored. I don't think our minds can yet comprehend a place like that because we have no material frame of reference.

Try thinking about this life you're in never ending. How would that make you feel?

Btw, you're discussing feelings here. In eternity, I want to feel peace and love and that appeals to me.

1 of 2 things will 100% happen. You will either meet a supreme being that created everything, or your energy and matter will be transformed into something else. Maybe a new planet.

So you would rather be burning, suffering, always thirsty, tormented in your own flame instead of having everything and more? I choose heaven where I will have a mansion, all the food I want, no pain and no stress, where I will be loved, probably can fly, and be with the One who created me and gave his own life for me.

Psalm 37:11 Revelation 21:3-4 under these conditions life everlasting would be great.

I assume our existence would be similar to what it was before we were born. Nothing about you would exist. You just would no longer "be".

Ideas about afterlife is one of the biggest reasons religion exists in the first place. People were worried about what happens when we die, so we contrived a whole system of religion to quell our fears.

That's just what I think though. Like I said in my OP, I'm wanna be agnostic. I want to believe in something, but my brain won't let me.

How do you know this to be remotely true? Were you around at the beginning? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Just asking.

But what is pleasure without pain?

If eternal pleasure is constant doesn't it just become a baseline and no longer anything special... Aka boring like the OP said?

Good question. I love everything about my life here on Earth. But I imagine after being here for a few hundred years, it would not be the same.

You hear really old people talk about they've been around long enough and are ready to go. I wonder if people start to live to be 120-130 with advances in health and medicine, would we think life is too long.

Oh, trust me. I'm not a fan of dying or seeing loved ones pass.
