Is Mexican a derogatory term now?

The other day I was chatting with someone I know well. I mentioned I had a couple Mexican guys build a flagstone patio at my house that I could recommend him. I knew the guys where from Mexico.
This person reacted like I used a derogatory word.
So it made me think. There is a Mexican restaurant in every town in America. The word is very common in our vernacular.
I normally don't use it and go with Hispanic, but I was wondering other peoples thoughts.

Apparently it is. I mentioned to someone about an Arabian one time and was told it was an offensive term.

I'm Texan and they don't seem to get upset here when they hear it.

It is if you call a Cuban or Puerto Rican a Mexican. They get pissed. But I guess I can understand it, I'd be just as pissed if someone thought I was from Alabama.

I believe the preferred term is "Mexican Lite"

I think the term is "meximaybe." Just in case they're not actually Mexican.

I guess being called an American will be frowned upon next from PC police.

No it is not. It's as offensive as calling you an American.

The person probably thought it was offensive to label them as Mexican guys instead of just guys.
It implies you look at them differently because of their nationality, which I guess to sjws is some sort of bigotry.
Honestly though who can keep up.

It doesn't bother me.....but I'm not Mexican
I think we're supposed to call everyone 'it' now.

I normally don't use it but I didn't think it was a thing. I really only brought it up because there was language barrier with them.
Now, i know people from Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, etc take offense to being lumped in as Mexicans.

All adjectives, modifiers, and descriptives are trigger words now.
It's enlightened.

I mean if somebody calls me a mexican, I usually correct them and say.. I am actually from Honduras gringo.
I don't really get bent out of shape about it.
In Honduras we call any caucasian gringo...even if they are british, australian...whatever so I understand.
