Is it time to replace black boxes in planes with something more practical?

This was brought up when MH370 disappeared, but it just baffles me why we are steal using this ancient technology. The obvious answer is to use the cloud or something similar to record GPS, cockpit audio and the continuous status of electrical components of planes. Pilots don't like this because of invasion of privacy and making it hard to build working relationships with co-pilots. Enough is enough. How much money has been wasted on searching for these black boxes? It's insane how much money is being spent on trying to find these black boxes, when implementing a new and simple technology would cost tons less.
Thoughts?

makes sense, they're already flying through them. Probably just need a plug or something

Airbus already has this. Real time streaming to a database. Of course, the service is optional.

or they could just make them float and have a gps locator

The cost to retrofit thousands of planes and live streaming data would be significant. Do not support.

I'd be curious to see the cost of retrofitting with wifi/direct tv vs. streaming capabilities.

What!? Do not support then. That's not a world I'm ready to live in.

There's no way it costs more to do that than the amount of $ that was spent looking for MH370 alone. IMO, every country should require this on planes. If carriers fail to comply, they should be responsible for paying for any search and rescue costs.
