Dr. Andrews assessed my right shoulder issues when Imwas playing Senior League baseball. I avoided surgery by being given a corrosive-steroid shot 2 inches into the bursa sac and this allowed me free range of motion for about 10 -14 days of pain free exercise. My impingement was corrected and could throw without pain. It worked for me.

People seem to misunderstand the Andrews phenomenon, much like they misunderstand the road to success for many people.

The guy was and is a top notch doctor. He was undoubtedly the best in the world at what he did, for a very long time. With that came reputation and cache with the people who made their livelihoods with their bodies. That meant that learning from Andrews/working with Andrews would put you in contact with that elite, and that Andrews had the pick of the litter for people to bring in to his practice.

Success breeds success; even if Andrews himself is too old or not quite the surgeon he was 20 years ago, going to his practice is going to be every bit as good, because the top talent has followed, and the reputation he has built has to be maintained.

Back in 1988 I was working for a consulting firm In Hoover. I tore a muscle in my calf jogging down a beach In Oregon. Got back to the office on Monday morning but couldn't walk. We had a deal with UAB where he practices. I was sen to the ortho clinic that day.

I had heard of him but didn't know a lot about him. Well Dr. Andrews himself walks in to the room and, after examining me tell me it;s one of the worse torn muscle he has seen and thought I might need surgery.

I told him that I made a living running thru airports like OJ (before) and wanted to do what ever necessary to not have surgery.

He told me to take a week or so off and soak in a whirl pool if I could.

Well I had a small apartment in a beautiful complex there in Hoover that had a great work out facility including a sauna and a huge hot tub that held 20. So I would go there every night with a very large glass of half grapefruit and half vodka.

I had a blast. Met a bunch of cool people. After about 10 days my leg was healed to the point that I could walk with no problems.

And give all the credit to Dr Andrews. And good grapefruit!

He has a Lionel Messi jersey in his gulf breeze Lobby.

As far as best in the world, as said that's impossible to say. But a Messi jersey says a hell of a lot.

He more or less relocated to Pensacola. I think he had beef with Healthsouth and said screw it and built the facility in Gulf Breeze.

He has slowed down in the past few years.

eta To answer the OP, yes he's the best.

So who is "next up" when he retires? Will there ever be another one like him?

He did my cousins knee surgery and after rehab he was throwing 8 mph faster in all his pitches.

Andrews didn't do Prothro's surgery.

He runs the Andrews Institute, I bet it employs at least 100 if not 200-300. He's got a team of Ortho's there and all kinds of other staff and doctor's related to sports medicine injuries and recoveries.

As said, it's not really about him doing surgeries but him making it the best place for athletes to go.

I would think a Orthopedic Surgeon that operates on Pro Athletes is either well known for being real bad or real good.

His is for being real good.

when the baton rouge orthos ship their wives to him to repair ski injuries, you can bet he's pretty good.

It's kind of odd how many really good ortho surgeons are from Louisiana or practice in LA. Now retired Dr. Drez out of Lake Charles and Dr. Collins in LC are both outstanding surgeons. Andrews is world renowned and a pioneer in the field.

Local surgeons kept wanted to operate on my shoulder when I was a 15-16 yo up and coming prospect. Andrews politely called horseshite after repeating a MRI. They put me through the mill and gave us a customized PT program to take back home and put us in contact with a pitching coach they recommended. After finishing PT and changing my delivery, I picked up velocity, and it never bothered me again. Even added control. And gave me a age adjusted pitch count my coaches didn't like. This was in '89 before it was such a big deal.

He was also nice enough to tell me I was finished growing and I might want to focus on catching.

This. He not only determined I didn't need surgery, they analyzed my throwing motion and provided us with the info and training to never need it. Not to mention the pitch counts and emphasis on how bad curve balls are on the arm, especially young, developing elbows and shoulders. It wasn't just him. It's the team he's put together.

Probably just the best at what he does.

I was told he observed the surgery to repair my broken pelvis back in the mid 90s and was quoted as saying he couldn't do what my surgeon did.
