I believe it is inevitable b/c if you live long enough you'll eventually get it, but I would like to know what are the OT's thoughts on this issue.

I would like to know how many people would lose their job if there was a cure for cancer.

The answer is not a simple yes or no

I'd imagine curing cancer would also make a lot of money and jobs as well. Curing something doesn't mean it's just gone. There's money to be made in identifying it when it comes about and curing it, or at the front end before your birth if the cure is gene selection.

For some of the losers of the genetic lottery...inevitable.

I worked at MDACC for a long time, and some of the people in there are as healthy and fit as they possibly could be when they arrive. They lost the lottery.

But there are alot of preventative measures the average Joe can take.

Inevitable for some.

There are certain measures you can take to mitigate the chances, but at the end of the day, since we really don't know the causes of cancer, there is no way to prevent or cure the affliction.

There will never be a cure unless we know the cause, and I strongly subscribe to the theory that synthetics are the root causes of cancer.

i think it is neither inevitable nor preventable.

i mena, you can take all the recognized precautions to prevent cancer but you may end up with it later in life.

similarly, you can eat like crap, smoke occasionaly, and treat your body like a dump and may never get cancer.

Yeah, there is a huge conspiracy in holding back a cure to profit. :roll eyes:

Some 2250 years ago in Egypt, a man known today only as M1 struggled with a long, painful, progressive illness. A dull pain throbbed in his lower back, then spread to other parts of his body, making most movements a misery. When M1 finally succumbed to the mysterious ailment between the ages of 51 and 60, his family paid for him to be mummified so that he could be reborn and relish the pleasures of the afterworld.

Now an international research team has diagnosed what ailed M1: the oldest known case of prostate cancer in ancient Egypt and the second oldest case in the world. (The earliest diagnosis of prostate cancer came from the 2700-year-old skeleton of a Scythian king in Russia.)

If you get run over by a bus at age 20 you won't get cancer, so no it is not inevitable and is preventable.

Cancer is inevitable, no way around it. Although most will pass due to other factors before getting cancer.

DNA polymerase can't always replicate your DNA perfectly when cells are dividing, and mistakes/mutations accumulate as one ages.

Just depends on when that particular mutation occurs, setting off the cascade.

fyi, I know my stuff (masters in medical sciences, and eventually med school)

You can do things to try and prevent it like eating well and exercising.. at the same time some of us are genetically and biologically susceptible to forms of cancer.

There are a lot of variables at play. The smartest thing you can do is take care of your body.

Prostate cancer is highly associated with age. If you live long enough you will likely get it. This is well known. Though, it often goes undetected and you die from something else.

People often didn't live beyond sixty 2000 years ago. Heck they rarely went that long 200 years ago.

Yea, I'd say prostate is probably the one least influenced by diet or anything like that and thus the hardest to avoid (at least of 'common' cancers).

I bet it is preventable/curable but then you have to realize how much money drug companies will lose on a prevention/cure. They aren't in the business to make cures. These folks are the new mafiosi with government backing.
