iPad fire may have caused Egypt Air crash

Well this is scary for anyone who flies (commercial since it's the OT) on a regular basis. I see pilots with phones and tablets in the cockpit all the time.

Investigators believe an EgyptAir plane which crashed a year ago killing all 66 people on board may have been caused by a pilot charging his iPad in the cockpit.
EgyptAir Flight MS804 was jetting between Paris and Cairo in May 2016 when it disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean on May 19, crashing into the water between Crete and the coast of northern Egypt.
Egyptian authorities initially suspected a bomb was placed on board at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
Now French authorities are examining whether the plane in fact came down because of a fire caused by overheating mobile devices.
The inquiry will focus on whether an Apple iPhone 6S and an iPad Mini 4 known to have belonged to the plane’s first officer caught fire after being plugged into the wrong socket.

That seems really far fetched.

How can you say that in confidence?

I've seen several low quality usb cords get hot, burn, and even saw fire coming off of one of them being charged from a 2.1A source. Still seems unlikely but definitely not impossible.

Yeah. Probably a lot more likely that it was a Samsung Note that exploded.

I didn't want to quote the whole article, and might agree with you, but they do have some pretty strong evidence.
quote:
CCTV footage shows he had placed a tablet on an instrument panel close to where the fire is thought to have started. The plane’s flight data recorder indicated smoke on board, and wreckage recovered from the jet’s front section showed signs of high temperature damage and soot.
A voice recorded also picked up crew trying to put out a fire before the plane went down. The crash killed 40 Egyptians, 15 French citizens, and one Briton. Seven crew members and three security staff also died. A source close to the investigation said: ‘Cockpit plugs are not made for toasters or coffee pots. They’re for professional use. At this stage, the combustion or self-combustion of a tablet in the cockpit is the working hypothesis.’

Interesting. If they could somehow get the diagnostics from the phone/iPad's hard drives they'd reveal a timeline that could verify it. But they aren't exactly protected like the FDR.

I'm out the loop on this thing. Wasn't it the one that was never found?

Sounds like a theory pushed by Airbus.
Everyday thousands and thousands of flights takeoff with iPads in the cockpit and there are zero problems. It would look bad for airbus if this was another technical issue.

ISIS didn't take credit for this?

I didn't read it all before posting but a tablet catching fire seems a whole hell of a lot less likely than a usb cord. However, with a cord you smell it before it ignites and should have time to take care of it. Either way, I agree it is very unlikely.

I mean unless the crew was asleep in the cockpit it would be literally right in front of them. The article said it was resting on the control panel or something. Seems they would immediately see it sparking or smoking and could unplug and hit it with extinguisher if needed. Maybe I'm not getting the full picture of the scene.

Because the plane broke apart over the Mediterranean. I don't see how a fire could get that out of control so fast.

Yeah, I mean even the FAA approved them for pilot assistance/mapping.

This is bullshite, at best. It would have yo catch fire and burn thru the instrumentation panels before it had a chance to effect anything.
Or basically, he would have had to have it charging resting it on the wire bundles running to the instrumentation panels. NO WAY
