GARY, Ind. -- A woman from Gary, Ind., says she was discriminated against and kicked out of a Family Dollar store for wearing a niqab and hijab, and she caught part of the exchange on video.
Emotions are still raw for Sarah Safi, 32, who is used to being stared at for wearing her religious Muslim garment. But the mother of four said she had never before experienced discrimination like she did Monday at a Family Dollar store in Gary, where she went to purchase charcoal for a family barbecue.
"I might have made it 10 steps into the store and I hear the lady behind the counter say, 'Ma'am, you need to take that off your face or you need to leave my store,'" Safi said.
At that point, Safi began to record the exchange on her cell phone. Safi, who was born and raised in Texas, moved to Gary a few years ago. She told the clerk she wears a niqab and hijab for religious purposes; the clerk, who identified herself as the manager, insisted Safi leave.
"I understand, but you have to understand too this is a high crime area and we get robbed a lot. You need to remove that from your face or remove yourself from the store," the clerk is seen saying on the video.
"I told her this country is a country of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and I have a right to wear whatever I want," Safi said.
The Family Dollar employee told Safi if she didn't leave the store she would call the police, so Safi left. The worker also had parting words for her as she was on her way out.

She needs to relearn what those things mean.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume they weren't having pork at their BBQ.

We don't call it "Scary Gary" up here for no reason...

That logic always baffles me. Yes it is a free country. Businesses are, however, not government entities (yet) and are allowed to refuse service to any person for any reason. There may be economic consequences to this refusal but they are within their rights.

I was gonna side with the muslim woman until I read it was a high crime area and everyone has to remove their hoods or headwear for the cameras...I'm assuming. She would have to take it off or move to a better neighborhood.

This was part of the reasoning for the legislation in France several years ago, the "Act prohibiting concealment of the face in public space", that outlawed many garbs and head accessories, including burqas.
There is a viable point regarding law enforcement's inability to properly identify a potential criminal if all of their facial features and physical characteristics are concealed. Even with a hijab there are issues. Although the face might be clearly visible, there are still times when something as essential as hair color, length, and style might be hidden from any potential witness or onlooker.

If you're willing to take this to extreme logical exercises, let's go for it. Note that I said there may be economic consequences to this refusal.
Do you think there is any business in this country that openly states that they are refusing service based on race, religion, sex, etc. and expecting to stay in business? Especially in this age of social media?
Do some businesses have policies that seem discriminatory? No argument here (see: Tigerland bars "dress code"). But it is perfectly legal. And you as an American citizen are free to spend your money in this establishment or take it elsewhere.

She could have taken that thing off and gotten served. Blacks couldn't take off their blackness. So, no, not like the 60s.
