Son is only 5.5, should i get him the not too shabby $90 goal from academy, think it may of had like a 44" backboard and just plan to maybe get a nicer one in 4 years if he picks up the sport more or should i splurge now and get a nice one? I think he's too small now for a nice one and when he's of age, it'd be run down too much for when he'd really need it. THoughts? Or Recs of a specific goal somewhere to check out?

My parents bought we a nice goal when I was 7. Darn thing is still up at the house. I am 29 now. Do you really want a crappy Bball goal in your front yard?

I got the Rawlings one from academy, in ground with glass backboard. Kind of a pain in the arse to install but its really solid and kids love it.

Call Brian at Goals and Poles in BR. He will set you up with the baddest goal money can buy.

I read it as he was 5' 5" all the way until I read your post. I was thinking, "what the hell does it matter how tall the kid is?"

I read it as the boy's height as well. If he's only 5 yrs old, then that makes a difference.

Make sure the goal you get has a sturdy backboard. If not, the ball will hit and drop faster than Ray Rice's wife. He will be throwing up bricks when he starts playing rec ball on solid glass backboards.

As far as basketball goals, I think you should learn how to teach your son how to dribble with both hands and take layups from both sides. Don't worry about shooting threes until he gets much stronger.

My family is from Northeast metro-Atlanta in a fairly affluent area.
One day my brother and I were driving past the clubhouse/pool/tennis court area of one of the neighborhoods we live near.
In the parking lot of the clubhouse, there was a rusty basketball goal that was turned over on its side and completely neglected.
We both saw it and my brother simply says "that's how you know this is a white neighborhood."
