My wife and I are having a son in September and looking for an individual that can watch him starting in December. We had several options in Denham Springs for our first son, but now that we live in Baton Rouge it is much harder to find someone. She has looked on Care.com, Facebook, and Craigslist. The main options are nannies that want $20 per hour. That is just a little out of our league since that would cost $800 per week. Do any of you know any individuals that watch newborns out of their homes?

You went on Craigslist for a babysitter?

So you are looking on Craigslist for someone to watch your newborn son, AND you're being cheap about it? Seriously, if you can't afford to pay a nanny/daycare, then...

A. You probably shouldn't have had another kid

B. One of you should stay at home and work part time because the jobs y'all are at aren't worth having to hire a nanny so you don't miss time at work.

Sounds like this might be your best option.

This is all you need. Come home and check them at lunch / change diaper. One time costs only.

But seriously. You can't just bring them to daycare? Are you that cheap? And if so, you probably shouldn't be having kids to begin with.

Thanks, glad you said it first instead of me. OP, that'd be my vote too. Willing to bet your kid would much prefer being cared for by mommy than by a stranger.

This. If your jobs don't pay enough for you to afford daycare, one of you might as well just work part time and stay at home.

Has to be an individual and not a decent daycare?

well no shite, but what if mommy works?? my wife works, of course we'd prefer to just stay home and hang with the baby all day, but we use daycare instead.

OP, why not just use a daycare, much cheaper. we pay like 700 a month

A lot of those care.com folks put $20 but will take less. We hired two nannies from there requesting that per hour but we got one down to $14/hr and the other down to $15/hour.

Infants are relatively easy to care for since they sleep most of the day and no way I would pay someone $20/hour to sit around and watch TV.

Nannies cost triple what daycares cost. And there are tons of options. You either pay for good care or you get shitty care.

Look on mommy forums and stuff. And by that, I mean have your wife do it. We moved right after my son was born. My wife got a lot of good info from that for local stuff. There are sometimes nannies that watch a few kids and it knocks the price down. But ultimately, there are good daycares out there. Chance for your kid to socialize and learn.

Put the kid in a good daycare where he will be exposed to other kids. Teaches him to interact with other kids and also helps him develop immunities to common illnesses that circulate, like colds.

Or you can just plan on your wife having to stop work later on to home-school the little social introvert.

You mean a small at home daycare? If $800 per week is just a little out of your league why not consider a nice daycare for around 700-1000 a month. We lucked out and had an experienced, reliable nanny that was willing to work for 10.00 an hour but it did not last because she found someone willing to pay double. Frankly I would rather trust my newborn to a well established daycare at one of the catholic churches around town than any nanny or small home day care.
