re: If we could pass a gas tax of 5 cents, with all proceeds going to police payroll

How about, instead of adding another tax, we spend a lot less on the militarization of small town police forces at the local level and use those funds for recruitment and training of officers.
Maybe fedgov could chip in some more domestically if we did a lot less "nation building" over seas and focused on domestic defense.

I'm not a cop basher, but regardless of what you pay people it's hard to get competent people when you have a policy of turning down the best and brightest because you're afraid they'll be "too bored" as some police forces do.

Like how the lottery and casinos are going to help with roads and education right?
Posted on 7/24/16 at 9:37 pm to Napoleon
The government already siphons off enough of the gas tax that the roads are in an utter state of disrepair. So you want to add additional taxes to pay for something not even having to do with roads?

Gas being so cheap now, it seems the perfect time to tax,
Thing is that once gas goes back up, that tax will never go away.
Good luck getting any government to willingly repeal a tax and good luck getting police unions to not oppose the repeal.

Texas is tax at the rack, so he actually pays the distributor or supplier the taxes, who paid the taxes when they removed it from the rack.
It's not really comparable to sales tax.

The only way he made 80k was working on his off days. They can make good money, but have to work two jobs to do so.

Wow the police are going to use these tragedies to try and get more money?
Huh? Cops are making more than welders and many IT workers when you consider benefits, particularly the retirement benefits that are insane. State police recently got a 20% across the board raise.
Wow. It seems evident that the police go out of their way NOT to hire the brightest people. All you'd be doing is giving these same government employees more money.
Taxes and love of government. Oddly enough there are lots of "small government conservative" Republicans that would support this. 5 cent tax would be $150 million if we are talking statewide in Louisiana, or $7 billion nationwide.
Oh, and how do you feel about the state dedicating money for certain things and being unable to use it for anything else in times of budget crisis?

Law enforcement retirement is pretty sweet though, especially with State.
But it doesn't matter how much cops are paid. When dealing with thugs on the daily, a lot of crap is bound to happen.

Problem is the politicians will put that in there pockets.
Or divert the money to education, which is sorely needed.

We don't have a problem with law enforcement, cops are gonna cop. We have a problem with dumbasses

How are we going to pay for bridges and roads? Increase speeding fines? Parking fines?

So basically the cop version of "thats racist!"

Wrong. We spend billions more on education than ever before and our students aren't getting any more proficient. Throwing more money at the problem isn't making it better. It's one of those things that sound great to say - let's give teachers more. Let's invest in our kids.
This is how the Department of Education went from a $2.2B budget to a $77.5B budget in my lifetime.

I ask because let's face it the reason why police have issues with recruitment and hiring is the low pay. They should start at at least $50k with brass making six figures.
Cops in many places start at more than 50k.

Would rather give it to teachers

I'd rather not raise taxes. Teachers and cops in most large cities are paid enough

why cut government waste when you can raise taxes, amirite?
