If sexual orientation doesn't matter, then why does an event like this exist?

Lavender Graduation: The LGBTQ Project/Safe Space Campaign will host Lavender Graduation Wednesday, May 13 at 2 p.m. at the LSU African American Cultural Center. Faculty, staff, and students will celebrate the academic achievement of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning students, and allies graduating this spring, summer, or fall. Lavender Graduation is co-sponsored by Spectrum, LSU’s LGBTQ student organization. For more information about Lavender Graduation, please contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs at 225-578-4339.
Who gives a frick if you are homosexual, asexual, pansexual, bisexual, trisexual, omnisexual, semisexual, quasisexual, ultrasexual, etc.?
If non-heterosexual individuals are just like everyone else and therefore should be treated the same both from a legal standpoint as well in everyday interactions, then what is the point of this?
You are only further alienating your niche group from the mainstream. I'm all for celebrating our differences but this sort of thing pisses me off.
How has your sexuality hindered or impaired your ability to receive an education? These people act like they have overcome some sort of academic adversity simply because they are into different kinks/partners in the bedroom.

Thank God that I am no longer on studen government at LSU. I hated dealing with Spectrum.

I think the point is that they are currently not treated like everyone else.

So they can call themselves queer?

You? I mean...you posted it because you seemingly have an issue with it...right?
As someone who really DOESN'T give a shite, I'd ignore it myself. But then, I actually don't care.
Complaining about a thing to point out how much you don't care...welcome to America 2015.

But by alienating themselves from the remainder of the student body they are only furthering this mistreatment. I don't understand how their sexual orientation warrants its own celebration/ceremony.
Why can't we interact as a cohesive scholastic community in which all degree recipients are viewed the same (aside from the differing diplomas/degrees received and honors distinctions)?

They should drop the T and make it LGBBQ
I would support large barbecue marriages

Was the Muslim center an option to hold this function?

literally every single fricking group on LSUs campus has some type of graduation party for the members of that group graduating
stop trying to find something to get mad about that isn't there

Oh don't think I didn't think about the Greeks or ethnic groups and their individual parties. I think all of that is bullshite too.
If an academic group comprised of students of the same major or academic discipline studies decides to celebrate in such a fashion then that's fine. In fact, I would encourage such interactions. Its beneficial from a networking standpoint and helps strengthen the bonds and pride of the respective academic program.
After all, this is an academic institution which, theoretically at least, seeks to further the education of its students and also provide them with the necessary tools to thrive as scholars.
These are University-sanctioned events which seek to further divide us among each other into demographics or labels that have no bearing on our education.
But, then again, perhaps my underlying gripe is more related to my loathing of social gatherings rather than the specifics of the matter.
